Help with brakes

So I need a hand here identifying the problem with my brakes.

I am currently running StopTech cryo slotted rotors and TRD pads. This setup has been on the truck for about 5 months. I am Active Duty Army and live on base so I’m not hitting high speeds, not towing at all either. They have MAYBE 5,000 miles on them at most.

I am getting an Incredible amount of shuddering while braking coming down from 60mph to a stop. So much that it’s shaking the whole truck pretty violently. I have ran these same rotors in the past with hawk pads and they lasted a good 6 years.

There are deposits and some, what seem to be cracks on the rotors. My question is, do pads cause warping? I am going to replace the rotors as clearly they’re bad, but do I also need to replace the pads?

 

Yes. Always change pads when you change rotors

 

I would replace the pads.
I’d also make certain the I used new hardware with all matings surfaces cleaned.

 

dont forge to prep the new rotors, rough sand them.

 

it looks like the pads aren't fully bedded yet, those TRD pads have a heavy metal content which enables better stopping but the negatives are heavy dusting and rotor wearout, I would give it some time before replacing the setup, try a few stop and goes without over doing it it should eventually get better. id measure the rotor thickness minimum thickness is 26mm

 

thanks for the optimism, I need it. I did the initial break in (60mph then got brakes to about 10mph rinse and repeat about 10 times)

what’s strange is the brakes were fine the first 4 months. This started up about 3 weeks ago.

 

A piece of Emery cloth on a mighty fien (knock off, DeWalt in this case,) tool works great. Brake cleaner first though.

 

Are the pads wearing evenly?
How is the hardware? Any signs of corrosion or rust?

 

pads appear to be wearing evenly, but looking at them won’t tell the true story. I’ll measure them tomorrow to see if they’re off.

hardware is all ok as well. Not new by any means, but also no surface rust or anything.

 

I don't know if you can do it but you can roughly check the rotor thickness with a micrometer should be between 26-28mm thick, it does appear that those TRD pads are scoring the rotors but that's because TRD pads are a semi metallic compound pad and these have excessive metal content that would cause that scratch look to the rotors, I would give it a little more time before replacing stuff could be those rotors and pads aren't fully bedded to the rotors yet, ive had a similar problem when I replaced just the pads to my OEM Rotors without prepping the rotors it took a few hundred miles before the vibes subsided to a livable condition

Cryogenically treated rotors should not be showing this kind of wear in less than 6 months. I would check your source of supply for these. I only buy here. www.frozenrotors.com

 

I picked them up at autoanything on 15JAN20. I wasn’t expecting to have issues with these as they are the second set I have run and the first set was on for 6 years.

I’m wondering if the pads could have something to do with it...... I don’t know enough about brakes to know how to proceed from here....... try new pads, try uninstalling, cleaning, re installing, try new rotors, scrap it all and start over with new pads/rotors

 

Based on the gouging of the rotors I would think they are not cryogenically treated. I went 85,000 miles on my MINI Cooper and still had plenty of life on the cryo rotors. Normally I would be replacing them every 30,000 miles.

 

I’ll have to go back to look at my order receipt......... I suppose it’s possible. I had a bit of trouble with the shipping of the rotors, perhaps I either made a dumb mistake and ordered non cryo or I was shipped the incorrect rotors (likely not the latter, I have made worse mistakes)
