head installed and now have a p1300 code

I just changed my head after it was serviced with a valve job and resurface on 97 tacmoa 2.4 ltr. It took 5 minutes of cranking to get it started. I thought it was starving for fuel with a new filter and empty lines. I stopped and started it 4 times. When it was running it idled smooth. Now it will not start and my obd ll code reads P1300. Ok, when I lowered my timing gear and chain I turned the engine over by hand to clean the carbon off of the pistons. Later after installing the gear and chain back onto the intake cam the chain to gear mark was off by 5 teeth on the sprocket. I was told that if The #1 piston was at tdc and confirmed by the crank pulley, the cams both lined up on there marks, and the distributer was installed back lining up at #1 plug, then the chain shouldn’t matter. I don’t think that is the problem but it was in the back of my mind. Sticky listed p1300 as igniter circuit #1 under code problems. I’m stuck. What should I do now?

Ok, today I came across somthing weard. I did get it started again but it will only run with the OBD ll scanner connected. I think that it was also conected on the initial start up too. When it runs with the scanner connected it doesn't detect any codes. Sorry I didn't check compression.

 

Check your grounding. my cousin recently installed an intake manifold on his car and forgot to tighten down his ground wire. same thing happened to him. car only started with the scanner connected.

 

I bought my tacoma and the previous owner had done a valve job and replaced the head, but told me that he was not able to set the timing belt marks. Can anyone advice or give me a link to the timing belt and cams marks on 95 tacoma. Its has a rought start, does not stay idle and no power. The check engine light is own and I dont know how to get the code from it. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

 

Usually when it comes to anything with timing and aligning i wouldn't mess with..take it to a professional

If you want to tackle the timing issue I suggest that you buy a service manual and read about timing chain replacement. I have to warn you that it's not for beginners. You will have to have some mechanic experience, tools, and time. About the codes, you will have to hook up a OBD code reader to the truck from inside the cab. The service manual will show where to hook it up also. I would also advise to check the compression to see if the valve job was done right. I checked my valves with gasoline for leaks before installing it. Good luck
