The summer of my 3rd grade year my parents moved to a new neighborhood and sent me to the local city run day camp.

My first day I was lost not knowing anyone and there were a group of older boys in a circle laughing. One of them grabbed me and told me to step on a brown bag on the ground they were a stomping on. I was a little scared and did what they asked- they all quickly dispersed as this huge guy approached- they all quickly started yelling “Carl, this guy was stomping on your lunch”.

I was sure I was about to catch a beating, but Carl just laughed and said “I wasn’t hungry today”.

Carl was slightly retarded, and that summer I watched as these older kids taunted, abused and tried every way to make life miserable for this good natured kid.

I developed a hatred of bullies that summer that stays with me to this day.

 

And gas was 22 cents a gallon.

 

Remember when gas went over $1 and the pumps could only go to $.999, so they went to half gallon prices!

 

Yep, that was during the second gas crisis.

 

Remember when you bought cigarettes from a vending machine and no one cared how old you were!

.....they raised the price of Coke to .30 so you got Royal Crown cause it was still .25, and the cans had pull tabs!

 

I think we did that to pretty much anything and everything...
