Selling my 5th gen 4Runner for a Tacoma

It was a good run. But I want to try something new. Going from a 14’ 4Runner SR5 Premium with 113k miles to a stock 16’ Tacoma limited with 36k miles.

I can’t wait!

Now I just need to figure out what I want to do first.

Remove chin spoiler, have the transmission TSB update completed and buy some meaty tires.

Suspension upgrade will most likely happen first. I had 5100’s on my 03’ tacoma and my 4Runner. I will most likely go that route again.

I’ll do my research. But if anyone wants to suggest a suspension setup, I’m listening. My last tacoma had the bilstein shocks set at +1 3/4”~ in front and OME leafs in the rear (with one leaf removed). I loved that setup.

Why not just enjoy it? They are great trucks as is.

 

My neighbor was always a chevy tahoe guy till now, just bought a 2020 4 runner. From what i've heard of 2016 taco's you might be wishing the 4runner back.

 

My BIL has a newish 4Runner SR5. We went off-roading in my Taco last week, and he was impressed with its performance, particularly with the suspension and ride. He also thought the 4R had more up-front torque, but ran out of steam later on, while the Taco had a more linear power-band—power when you need it.

If you don’t need an enclosed bed and/or want a manual, the Taco is the way to go. The styling of the Taco is more modern, as well, though the 4R is due for an update next MY.

I did cross-shop the 4R and Taco to some extent, and I thought to get the same features in the 4R was a lot more expensive. I could be wrong though. I was mainly focused on the Taco, while the $40K+ 4R’s on the lot didn’t interest me too much.

I've driven both a 5th gen 4runner and new Taco... both have their pros and cons. Generally speaking, the Taco excels around town and off road, but is not so great for long road trips due to the refinement issues (diff howl in particular for me). 4runner is better for road trips, but handles like a cruise liner, and doesn't have as much utility.

it was great. I only owned it for 2 years, didn’t give me any issues at all.

 

We’ll see what I think after a while. I’ve always liked my vehicles to be a little different. I might go easy on this one. I really just need it for camping, ice fishing, and hauling homeowner stuff around.

 

Yeah, I want the truck bed. The 4Runner isn’t ideal for me. All winter I haul a generator, gas cans, ice auger, garbage etc. I like the limited that I’ll be picking up. I never thought I’d be a leather and sunroof guy, but after having both in the 4Runner, I don’t think I’ll ever do anything else. Being a dog owner, leather is key.
