truck shuts off immediately after cranking up

Brand new to this website, so please bear with me. I have a 2008 Tacoma with 205,000 miles. The truck will start right up and in one second will cut off. It will not crank back up. Go back 15-20 minutes later and will start right up. It has occurred around 1/2 dozen times since I purchased with 77,000 miles. Now, it has happened 3 times in a 24 hour period. TIA for your help.

 

Do you have a check engine light? Also, is there anything you noticed as a constant when it happens, like moisture, heat, cold...etc. Whether you do or not then I would suspect a bad cam or crankshaft sensor. Alos, does it by chance have a remote start? I had a similar issue when I installed my remote start and it was programmed incorrectly. Luckily I was able to bring it a local shop that was willing to reprogram it for me.

 

No engine light on at anytime. Weather can be either cool or hot. No idea about bad cam sensor. If it has remote start, I am not aware. When the truck was delivered to me from Texas, it did not come with working remote. I purchased a Toyota remote. That is a good point, never thought of that.

 

Check fuel pressure.

 

My concern is now it is happening more frequently, 3 times in 24 hours.
Last time it occurred around 60,000 miles ago.

Before doing that, make sure you don't have an immobilizer light that is flashing while cranking. It's a quick check.

If you don't have the capability or tool to check fuel pressure then take it to someone who has the tool or capability to do so. With that many miles it sounds like you have a fueling issue and based on your concern, you should start there first.

 

I’m thinking, like said above, cam or crank sensor. These don’t necessarily throw CELs. Also, does it have a chipped key? It is also acting like an anti theft thing

 

OP, I would do this first to rule out a failing fuel pump.

 

Something else to try is to wiggle the cam and crank sensor wires following along the harness while its running and see if it shuts off. It would also be a good idea to inspect the connector for each of those for loose pins or corrosion. I don't suspect it being a fuel issue as these trucks aren't well known for having faulty fuel system issues.

Take a look under the dash on the drivers side and look for any cut or spliced wires, that would indicate if there is or was a remote start installed. If it appears a remote start was removed and there are repairs or scotch-locks still installed then while the truck is running start wiggling those wires to see if it shuts off. From there you'll also have to remove the steering column trim and check for the same stuff around the ignition cylinder wires. It is very common when scoth-locks are used that they will cut the wire and only a few strands will still be intact, which is obviously bad since it drastically reduces the amount of current able to pass through.

 

I'm not sold on CPS since there's no CEL and usually you will experience idling issues. While you are at it, you should also try cleaning the MAF sensor along with changing the spark plugs if you are still on the originals. It still points to a fuel issue.

 

Same year same problem. This is what fixed mine. Might sound crazy I guess it programs a function that if you leave your keys in your ignition it's an anti- theft feature. Mine did it for a long time before I figured it out and for a long time I would keep the keys in the ignition but now I don't. I live in a small town. So with your remote I think it's either 3 or 5 lock and unlock the door then put the keys in the ignition turn it all the way on and off three to five times then take them out and lock and unlock the door with the remote 3 or 5 times start it up

 

I would also look at the fuel pump. Check your wiring, make sure it's not just a loose connection causing the issue. Corrosion can also make strange things happen on wires.

 

My 99 chevy suburban had a fire in the wiring harness and the fuse box so I spliced the wire in the wiring harness but now it makes a weird noise and turns after driving it for a little and it has gas but its been parked for 2 months almost and i have no idea what the problem is but once you get it going and dont get off the gas it keeps going
