What to do about tick (blood sucking kind)

This is not a good idea. Deet (especially high concentrations) can melt/damage some fabrics and plastics. It’s surprisingly nasty stuff (but I still use it when the skeeters get real bad).

I learned this as a Boy Scout when we had a bottle of 100% explode in a dry bag on a canoe trip. It melted right through the bottom of the bag.

I would not risk spraying the interior of my $30k truck with it!

 

Cover it with vasoline. They can’t breathe and pull out. Then just remove it.

 

Yup, my buddy had a bottle of bug spray cap come loose in his raft while trailering it. Poured out and ate a hole clean through the PVC floor.

No joke, I don’t fuck with ticks. My wife got but once by a Lone Star tick. They cause you to become immediately allergic to red meat. It’s progressive too, so it gets worse over time. She has to carry EpiPens and all now. It fucking sucks. All because of one damn tick.

 

Forget about it. Go to an urgent care they’ll give you a single dose of doxycycline and call it a day. Follow up if symptomatic after.

 

Yup. But a Lone Star tick makes you allergic to red meat immediately. That’s about as bad as getting Lyme.

 

1. The various diseases carried by various ticks are only able to be transmitted if that tick is an infected carrier.
2. If you are determined to treat the truck which I would not recommend. Use a commercial product called precor 2000. I is not a RUP so anyone can purchase. It contains an IGR as well. You only need to treat the fabric areas. Repeat the treat in 10 to 14 days for any possible nymphs. One can will do.

 

I haven't read all the posts but I expected some type of infestation. OP must live in the city . One tick? I got 20+ ticks off of me just yesterday after fishing, at least 5 of them were bit in, and I found one more I missed today. If you had one crawling you probably had more. Living on a farm most of my life, especially as a kid I would have days where I would get in a nest of deer ticks with so many bit in you'd scrape them off your legs. Hell you'll get ticks around here walking to the mail box. I have read plenty about lymes disease and whatnot but I know a lot of people and we all deal with them constantly and I've never heard of anyone catching anything from a tick irl. Not to mention they have to be bit in for days before the chance is there and it'll start itching way before that. Worrying about a tick is like panicking because a mosquito landed on your arm.

ALL that said I get it parasites suck. Just check yourself good and you'll be fine. The one in your truck will probably crawl out or up in something where it'll stay till it's dead way before you ever find it.

Did you know if you get in the water at the beach you could get flesh eating bacteria?

 

You just need to catch a possum now and throw it in your truck. Possum eats tick and you have a new co pilot. Win win.

Skunks will also eat ticks. They like black widows too. While ticks are not a real issue in my area, I enjoy seeing our little skunk come by every night. It pokes its head into all the plants, flower beds and snuffles around the grass. Friendly little critter too. No fear of humans (wonder why ). And unlike the local possums has no fear of coyotes.

This is idiotic, Lyme disease is no joke! I have a friend who spent 2 weeks in the Neuro ICU who lost basic motor skills and couldn't keep food down because of a "little bug".

 

You know, I do Animal Nuisance work and people freak out when they see a skunk wander through their yard. I say "leave it alone". They do a lot of good as far as rodent control. Now if they act sick or aggressive--that's another story!

 

i'm in Putnam County. it is a little worrying when even the "normal" bites can leave an itchy, red welt that lasts for weeks. but when in doubt, just get a dose of antibiotics.
