Recycling old fluids

I'm going through my garage and I have a ton of old brake fluid, AT fluid, power steering fluid, etc. I usually drop off my used oil at Wal-Mart (since it's free and they recycle the filters as well) but they said they won't take other old fluids. I don't want to dump these down the drain, for obvious reasons. Where does one take these types of fluids to for recycling?

 

The landfill,nobody will take them for recycling.

 

Pretty sure Auto zone takes all those. Or a haz recycling facility. All else fails, mix with motor oil and give to WM.

 

I would check out the interwebs I just deposed of an old refrigerator at designated Enviro safe place/manner theres resources on the net

 

I tried a few local mechanics, none of them take old fluid for recycling. I also couldn't get a straight answer out of the 3 I called what they actually do with them, or where they take them. They all just said they recycle the fluids they change there.

I've checked here already and called them. No dice. They just say they don't accept automotive fluids. Local county landfill takes old paint and household stuff on certain days but they also said no to the automotive fluids.

 

City household hazardous waste collection center. Every largeish city should have one or something like it.

 

Walmart will take AT. I've done so myself, telling the tech as much and seen him dumping it in the same collection container as the motor oil. PS for the Tacos is Dexron III, an AT. Brake oil, as suggested, I've mixed with motor oil and taken it to walmart.

 

All my motor oil, AT fluid, gear lube, brake fluid, and power steering fluid gets poured into a 15 gallon container and emptied at the city dump. They have never complained.

 

Auto part store most likely will take it.
At my dealer we 2 used fluid tanks. 1 tank for coolant and 1 for engine oil/trans/power steering/gear oil/brake fluid.

Might be able to get the jiffy lubes guys to let you dump it there, wait till they arent busy and bring a cold soda/gatoraid or a beer if you want.

 

Emptied in the landfill or in their collection containers for fluids? If in the landfill, do they know you are dumping fluids?

In Auto Repair for Dummies, it says, "Never dump oil onto the ground, throw it out with your regular garbage, or flush it down a drain. It’s a major toxic pollutant that needs to be treated accordingly. In many locales, putting oil filters into a landfill is against the law, so you may risk a fine."

 

The city dump has two 1000+ gallon waste oil tanks. Where it goes from there, who knows.

 

@Dens71TA That's what I was trying to get clarification from post#10. If he dumped in waste bins, or dumped it in the landfill, as he didn't clarify.

 

Go to a Walmart that doesn’t have an auto service center. The hazmat drop off area is usually up front near the customer service desk. You can just walk up and drop off in the bin and if you’re that worried use some sort of opaque container. I don’t think anyone will be monitoring that closely.

 

I'm lucky my county takes different kinds of haz waste a few times during the year. Come to think of it, the Rona might have shut them down. I should look since I have some I could get rid of.

 

should be able to take it to any name brand auto parts store.... never had an issue recycling coolant, oils of any kind.

 

from what I hear if you can mix old motor oil and trans fluid,coolant together and put it in a jug it all goes to the same place anyways. around here where I live they use it to burn in the furnace during the winter time since its all mostly oil based it doesn't matter. in fact I work in heavy equipment company they will burn all the old used oil from company machines and vehicles in the furnace they have at their corporate building.

 

Just dump them down your neighbors drain and then call the cops on them. J/k don’t call the cops....
