I have an onboard setup, but have a tank that I sometimes put In the bed instead of permanently mounted.

I was looking for out of the way locations and was wondering if anyone installed one above the rear wheel(above the splash shield) I haven’t removed the splash shield to see what obstacle might be there. This would go on the passenger side and have the mounting holes drilled through the composite of the inner bedside.

I’m thinking the 2.5 or 3 gallon hotdog shapes tanks might fit there.

Has this been done with success?

Most go with mounting it in the location of the spare tire.

yeah, But I’m trying to keep my spare there. Trying to keep bedspace maximized without having to do a swing out bumper.

Edit: unless it fits between the spare and the bed, pretty big gap there at the front of the spare

Most also run tires that have spares that no longer fit in the normal location.

I guess I’m not most then lol. I can wheel those 265s hard... seriously though, on board air for me is used a lot for UTV tires, airing up kiddy pools and other random stuff, super handy to have

Guys have put them along the frame on the passenger side or small tanks behind the rear fenders, but the wheel well may be asking for contact with the tire. I have a 4 gallon viair tank between the hitch mount and spare area. I’m not running a spare under, so I’m not certain, but a 265 might have enough room.

are they fitting within the channel of the frame, or at least mount so they aren’t lower than the frame? I’ve thought about that, but was concerned about it being rock snagger

Right now I have everything running down the passenger side to a quick connect that I can use to hook up the tank or just use the compressor only coming into the bed through the front cubby

There is lots of dead space in the bedsides. I think the bigger concern would be making sure it’s in there securely. I’ve seen how you party and you don’t want it putting too much stress on the composite.

Seems like lots of usable space. I’d probably use a backing plate of some sort on the inside of the bed if I decide to go that route.

I mounted my 2.5gal tank to the backside of the rear bumper20190502_184055.jpg you can still fit the spare up there if you have any kind of lift. Otherwise it will hit the rear diff

I did have to cut and reweld the mounting points on the tank to move then inward to be able to mount behind the licence plate

OP, this is what I was referring to. Apologies. Mine is the same size, 2.5 gal, not 4 that I previously mentioned.

Well, I dropped down to a 1.5 Gallon and was able to get it to fit behind the bumper with a spare. After looking all over for alternative places, this seemed the be the least risky. It will just barely fit with a 265/75r16 duratrac under there. The spare is fully retracted in case the photo makes it look otherwise.473C0FE2-658D-4EB1-BD1E-99932CCE4169.jpg

thread title changed in case anyone is searching for this solution.
