Gears for 285's on 2nd gen

Thinking about going to 285's with 3" lift do I need to regear? Will 285's rub ?

4.56 is perfect for 285’s if you want the stock feel back. I don’t have a regear yet and I don’t mind the power loss. It’s really only noticeable on the highway going against the wind or going up a big hill.

 

What lift kit did you go with?

 

I ran 5100’s and OME coils with JBA UCA’s for a long time and it was great. I run kings up front now w JBA’s but I still have 5100’s in the rear for the meantime

 

I just put on 285s 2 to 2.5ish of lift
Probably won't re gear. I got the cmc done smashed the pinched weld and cut a little bit of plastic. And my wheel specs and 17 x 8.5 4.5 back spacing -6 offset.

 

I would go 4.56 for 285s. That would put you back in factory spec rpm’s.

Use the tire calculator under tools to gauge size vs RPMs.

I’m on 285s for another 3 days to prep/break-in gears before jumping to 35s. I’m on 4.88 and it’s overgeared. I’m at 2800-3k rpm between 70-75mph. It’s bearable. Great MPGs in city driving tho, at least on my scanguage.

I’d like to hear back how the 4.88’s are on the highway with 35’s. I wanna make the jump to 35’s but I just don’t really know if it’s worth the extra MPG loss.

 

I pull a atv on a small trailer for work, I think I will want the extra low end power. Just curious is there a 3" lift out there where tires wont rub?

 

With 4:10's, are you running a manual trans?

 

From what I have researched, running 33’s is fine without regearing. But if you did, 4.10’s would put you close to stock (not worth the $$$ for regearing) though some like to run 4.30. 4.56 is a little overgeared for 33’s (but something to consider if you plan on going 35s) Here’s an example I’ve come across when reading through forum:

the lower the number the less rpms it will take. 4.10's will put you 2.5% more rpms for the same mph as a stock geared stock tire truck with your 285/70R17's, 4.30's will put you at 7.5% more rpms than a stock geared truck with stock size tires.

For example. if it takes a stock truck with stock tires 2200rpms to do 65mph (gps), and you regear to 4.10's with your bigger tire it will take 2255rpms (or pretty damn close to stock rpms). 4.30's will be 2365, which ishigher than stock, 4.56's would be screaming.

 

Well I’ll let you know tomorrow, got an Appt at 12:30 to get them put on. Most guys here with 2nd gens that have regeared run 4.88s with 35s.

What does it cost to regear?

 

had the tires installed. According to scanguage, I’m at roughly 2500rpm at 65mph. 2700rpm at 70mph. Dropped rpms roughly 2-300 from 285s with the 4.88s. Truck feels great. Feels more ‘stock’ with shift points and power curve. With the 285s, I felt like the trans was burning through gears, but was real torque-y and fun . Hope this helps!

edit: I will add, I was running 285s for 4 years on stock gears. Drove across country twice. No complaints. Just have to be okay with slower acceleration, but you get use to it. I regeared to 4.88 cause I had planned to go to 35s.

 

What are your stock gears, 4.10's? I'm running 305/65/17 which are about the same as the 285's and with the stock 4.10 gears even with the automatic it's fine. But I'm also lighter with the reg cab.

 

Running 3.90's with 5spd auto.

 

"Need" to re gear is subjective, and you will get a different answer for every person you ask.

If you want to get the truck back to stock effective ratio's, shift points, etc....then yes you "need" to re-gear.

I have a 4.0/5 speed auto and have run 4.10's and 255/75/17's (31.5ish inches tall) and now 4.56 on 255/80/17's (that measure to a true 33 inches tall) and I can't imagine running any sort of over-sized tire on stock gears anymore.

 

I'm about to regear my 2nd gen Tacoma. I have a lot of extra weight(bumpers,witch, RTT, skids ...) Should I got 4.88 or 4.56 is perfect?
