02' v6 4wd rear shocks

I recently acquired a Tacoma and along with the flat leaf springs one of the rear shocks is connected to the top of the frame while one seems to be connected inside it somehow.

Any help appreciated! They both could DEFINETLY use a replacement but this indifference has me nocked off track a little.

The lower part of the shock attaches to a plate held by the u bolts against the rear axle.

The top mount is inside the frame, putting the shock at a near 45 degree angle.

What's your question exactly?

The top of the right side shock is mounted on top of the frame somehow. Not sure if its some kind of bracket or welded due to rust.

 

It seems to be the same on yours. Im unfamiliar with suspension and happened to notice it was different to the other. Why is this exactly?

 

Without a picture, we can't tell you anything.

These frames are prone to rust, and it wouldn't surprise me if someone did some makeshift weld jimmy rig doohickey whatchamacallit

 

One mount is aft of the spare (driver) and one before the spare (passenger).

The mount itself that protrudes the frame are identical though and use the same bolt.

That's a stock mount, granted someone may or may not have welded it to add strength?

I'll look at my own truck in a bit.

 

Ok thanks. I just got the truck and don't have anything to compare it to as you said who knows what someone has done to it due to rust. My frame is actually quite nice. It may have been replaced but overall quite good. Thanks for your help!

I know I'm dragging this out but any recommendations on what I should replace the shocks and leaf springs with? I don't plan on hauling a whole lot very frequently but should I spend extra on heavier springs?
