    Hey gang,

New to forum. But not new to 4wheeling and Tacomas.
Been around the block a couple of times with Jeep, Land Rover, and Toyota. On my second Tacoma. Took my 2019 TRD Pro out for a trail ride this weekend and was very discouraged by the 4 High- 1st gear ratio. A trail here in the San Juan's that I've done 100's of times in all the vehicles above...And I got stalled out on a 30 foot hill section!!

I've read a little about nitro and revolution gear upgrade to 5.29 or 4.88 gears...Is this going help my issue? O, my Tacoma is a Manual.

    Thanks in advance!

    John

If 4HI isn't low enough use 4LO. That's why it's there, it's not something you "save". Use it.

The 4hi gear ratios are the same as the 2hi ratios because you haven’t put the transfer case in low gear. So you could try 4Lo?

Stock height and tires or lifted?

If you are going for slow and finesse, use low range.

Night and day difference in hi range and low range. We have sand, deep sand here in Florida, even a slight hill will tax traction and power. Low range danced right up and out of all kinds of stuff, torque multiplication baby.

a little hard to know what's up from the wording about 4hi & crawling. o_O maybe a typo?

the MT crowd here can help if you're having performance issues. i think most of us have at some point and there are many solutions. but what's the problem specifically?

Lower gears in the axles is what you need , use low range only for the rock gardens /boulders

4LO is your best friend with a MT. I throw it in 4Lo as soon as it starts to get hilly, saves your clutch and multiplies your torque.

Im in 4hi only when driving on FSRs or on snow in the city.

SO I get all the suggestions about " Well, Just use 4 Lo..."
But here in the San Juan's the trails are varied and climb, then level, then climb steeper, then descending...blah blah..

So historically in all my previous vehicles, (including an 08 Tacoma SR6) I was able to rely on 4-hi until it got quite technical or I was descending. This allowed more freedom to modulate progress with the throttle rather than the clutch. ( Again this is a Manual Transmission).

The hill in question would never have been an issue in 4Hi 1st gear in any other vehicle. But the TRD Pro literally stalled out half way up...and it's only a 20-30 foot semi-steep climb on stable dirt.

    It really shocked me!

I disagree sir. I would use 4lo on reg trails. Your clutch will thank you. Thats what 4lo is there for. In AT you have torque converter, in MT you got the transfer case.

I'll throw a few things at you.

    1) these trucks have factory tuning that significantly mutes the power available from your hardware. OVTune threads around here can get you more info.
    2) beyond this, and don't take it personally, most experienced truck drivers who complain around here are having issues because they are not adapting their experienced drive style and refuse to rev up this 3.5 motor. if you are stalling it, that is on you. the motor even with the factory tune is strong enough to stay running if the driver keeps it in the powerband.
    3) you need this if you have a MT and appreciate a clear clutch feel: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/mt-accumulator-delete-mod-adm-and-bs-thread.568303/
    4) yes, lots of AT and MT trucks have gears, typically 4.88 or 5.29.

    more infos available.

Agree with you on all points. But, i just dont see the need for lower geared diff on an MT. The gears are already pretty low imo.

Reverse sucks big time i agree. Thats why i have 2Lo mod, just waiting for the switch. But other gears work great imo. When going 90km an hour im already at 2k rpm, so going lower would be horrible for hwy driving.

I dont think going 4.88 or 5.29 is really gonna fix the reverse issue. Reverse should be how it is when its in 4lo, stock.

Edit: reverse in my previos MT trucks was stupid high as well. Must be a gear storage issue.

X2 on low range. Reverse has nothing to do with when to use low range.

If anything low range is easier on the truck because the ratio is in the trucks mechanical favor and easier on it.

If you lower the ratio in the axles to 5.29 , it takes the strain off the clutch

Never needed low range in my old 68 M38A1 jeep unless I was in a technical section were I needed to crawl and never had an issue with the clutch

    It had a GM SM465 4spd 6.54 1rst gear / 6.09 reverse

    Atlas / Dana 18 t/case 3.50 low range

    Saturn overdrive 15% reduction

Dana 44's with 5.38 gears and Detroit lockers

Worked out to 124:1 low range / in High range 35:1 gearing with it in overdrive , 29:1 straight thru gearing

If you put it in low range you take the strain off the clutch. The clutch is ahead of the axle in the ratio chain. The transfer case is in between them.

Let's be honest. All opinions aside, the Australian guys run 4lo all the time up to 40mph. There's not a massive report of premature wearing parts or failures. The failures come from people hitting obstacles like bulls.
