TRANSMISSION . Transmission coolers for all Toyotas ... Write up with many pictures

Where did you purchase the red hoses from and what size are they? They would look really good with the red color scheme on my truck.

 

Shit....no idea. Lol. Did this something like 3 years ago. If I recall correctly I got them from Napa.

Thanks! There are actually times I think about either removing the factory cooler, or bypassing the cooler in the radiator......and then I tow over mountains and hit 200 (for a few minutes) and am glad I have it this way. Granted, daily I run in the 150-160's but I follow the train of thought that a cooler transmission is better, even if it isn't as efficient.

has any one installed a cooler without having the tow package? my 3rd gen off road didnt come with one and im installing the bits so i can tow some things. ive got the cooler just trying to find a diagram or something to show how and where to hook it all up.

Can we get more information on that filter setup you got?

 

Today I installed a B&M Supercooler and Derale external Trans filter. Install went kinda smoothly. Completed a trans drain and the fluid was pretty brown. I struggled to get the truck into TEMP CHECK MODE. I think I'm going to do the same as you guys and monitor trans temps with my app to make sure I'm in the 115-130 degree range.



One question though, I don't have a

ScanGuage or UltraGuage, I'm using the OBD Fusion app through my iPhone and it shows two different trans temps. When driving they are off from each other about 10 degrees. Which one do you guys suppose measures pan temp? When driving uphill I see that A/T OIL TEMP 2 is always higher than A/T OIL TEMP 1.



I modified both gauges to highlight when both are in the Green (115-130 Degrees)

 

The pan will be the lower and the TQ will be the one that spikes when the transmission drops out of OD when you floor it.

 

The TQ will be the one that spikes down when you shift out of OD and into "4th gear" thus locking the TQ and reducing its heat.

So you are saying with the transmission in the "normal" drive position, you have higher temperatures than when you manually place the the transmission in 4th gear (OD off, RPMS up)? That is the exact opposite response I get or would expect?

Installed a 677 Hayden as recent DV trip in April 2019, trans temp light lit up 2x in two different days.

I run an Ultra Gauge and have no complaints. Never ran a Scan Gauge. UG has some cool Bluetooth/phone capabilities if that is of interest.

Added an additional cooler today. The hardest part is trying to mount it cleanly. Plenty of room up front though.

Look nice. Are you considering a fan? For stop and go or 4-low type situations, it is the lack of airflow that gets you.

 

I had this posted on another thread and @gearcruncher asked that I post it over here.

We had a nice weekend in South Texas and with National's MX not racing this weekend I figured it was a good time to install the Long Tru-Cool LPD 4454 transmission fluid cooler. After reading quite a few threads and checking out different brands, I decided to go with what @gearcruncher recommended for our trucks and my usage. Another reason is because I often travel to the northern parts NM and AZ during winter and have had my summer formula windshield wiper fluid freeze. I like the idea that the Tru-Cool "LPD" acts like a built in thermostate as to not over cool your transmision fluid. Since I wasn't worried about the "pink milkshake," which I understand is mainly a 4Runer issue and I like the idea of having the transmission fluid warmed up, I did not by-pass the radiator. Here are some pictures to help illustrate the process I took for the task at hand.

Just for reference here's a picture of the OEM cooler in my truck.


As you can see I left the OEM hooked up and moved it out of the way to pre-plan how I wanted to mount the new cooler. I decided to use the three factory mounting points for the OEM cooler and the forth mount would go where the bolt is on the center strut. Please note; I have a tray full of metric bolts for my motorcycles and I used two longer metric bolts to mount the brackets on the left side (circled in red). These metric bolts screwed right in to the factory bolt holes. On the right side, I used longer bolts that would fit through the factor rubber grommets, then backed them up with washers, lock washers and nuts.


Using the four (4) flat brackets included in the kit, I planned, marked and bent the brackets to fit. I used a propane torch and bench vise to help make the bends.


After each bracket was fabbed, it was mounted before making the next bracket. Once the brackets were made and in place, I checked for clearance issues and QC.


Once I felt good with the setup, I figured it might be difficult to duplicate the angles of the brackets, so I left the brackets on the cooler, removed the bolts holding the brackets to the four mounting points and removed the cooler with the brackets still attached. Once removed I used blue painters tape to mark the location and angle of each bracket. I did this to help with reassembly after painting the brackets.


Once painted, I reassembled the brackets using the blue tape as a guide for each angle, a dab of blue loctite on each bolt and rubber grommets between the bracket and the cooler. Also notice in the second picture (circled in red) I had to remove the curved portion of the end of the bracket for better mounting. This is on the bracket for the lower left side of the cooler where it mounts on the center strut.


The install went pretty quick since I did a dress rehearsal. I was thinking I could use the stock hoses, but for my comfort, they were a little to big for the new cooler. The hose that came in the kit was a little tight going on flared factory connections, but with a little transmision fluid on them and inside the supplied hose, it went on without too much difficulty.


All installed and ready to top off the fluid. I added just under one QT of fluid and then using my Torque app, I brought the fluid temperature up to 116 at the pan and 124 at the torque converter when I pulled the "check level" plug. I can't give you the exact amount in ounces, but I'd say it took a little more than 1/2 of the quart.

Thanks to @gearcruncher for his homework and write up(s) that made this a fun and productive project that I believe is going to help extend the service life of the transmission.

 

Just finished the install of a

B&M 70264 SuperCooler Automatic Transmission Cooler

B&M 70264 external transmission cooler on my 2020 SR5. It sucks that a truck with a tow package doesn't come with a aux trans cooler.
I tow a camper in the mountains so I'm not taking any chances.
The install was pretty easy, the hardest part was locating the best install location.
I was able to plug all of the lines so I only lost a few drops of fluid and I filled the new cooler with trans fluid. The only transmission fluid lost was in the lines, so no need to top off the transmission fluid.
The new cooler is bigger than the stock cooler that used to be installed, so it should do a good job keeping things cool.

Looking down from the top you can see the cooler has plenty of space front and back.
