I was thinking about this as well. The BlackVue power consumption is well below the max 1.5A, but the plug for the power into the camera is not a USB mount. You would have to make a patch cable - unless someone has posted a solution somewhere else.

BlackVue will not support USB for power. Found elsewhere (from BlackVue):
We are assuming you're wanting to use the USB outlet in your car rather than the cigarette lighter? This will not be possible to do with the BlackVue cameras as they require 12~24V to operate. USB outlets run at 5V and will not be able to be increased.

 

on my other cars I have hardwired directly into the cars electrical system via their power magic pro system. you go directly from the battery as well as the accessory circuit.

 

where did you tap into the truck for power? did you use the powermagic pro?

Yup, understood. I was hoping I could tap off of the rear-view mirror that this thread was talking about with my BlackVue. That would solve all kinds of wiring run issues - except the power off of the mirror is USB rated and won't be supported by the BlackVue. That's all. (I've already run the power in my Camry, was hoping I didn't have to go through those gyrations with the Tacoma.)

Granted, BlackVue's PowerMagic requires this run anyways - just being my typical lazy self with the wire run.

 

You could make your own adapter using this configuration. You would need to buy the connectors and pin terminals, and assemble as shown but simply leave out the USB adapter. One of my posts prior to the one I linked gives the part numbers for the connectors and pins.

Nope. Not that the adapter couldn't be made. (I initially set out to do this very thing.) But the BlackVue requires 12v (vehicle power) and the power off of the rear view mirror is 5v (USB power). It's not a matter of adapters, it's a matter of volts. For a BlackVue, you have to run the power down to the dash (and maybe the battery). The other camera models mentioned in this thread use a USB connector and can take USB power. I'm not sold on some of them, but the solution is fairly elegant.

 

Nope. The power off of the mirror is 12vdc. The power off of the SimpleUSB adapter is 5vdc. Reference the schematic I posted here. You can tap into the 12vdc at the mirror if that's what you want to do. Buy the SimpleUSB, remove the USB charging port from it, and wire directly to your BlackVue. Or buy the connectors and pins and build your own.

I still have to wire in the rear-facing camera, and will probably mount a roof-mount radio antenna - so there's still plenty of opportunity to totally botch things up...

I have a 2018 pre-runner and don't have a 12 pin to my mirror. But it seems the black box next to my mirror that holds the safety sense features hold a similar port. Has anyone used this instead? Sorry if my description is poor. I uploaded a picture. Thank you!

Yep, exactly what i used. Just make sure your cameras' cable has usb on one end.

 

Too bad someone just didn’t make a camera that plugs into that jack without all the extra bulk.
Makes me wonder why Toyota doesn’t just wire them to that port rather than the hardwire opinion they offer now.

 

What did everyone do with all the extra wire? Currently I have it ziptied up behind the mirror but it looks unkempt and while I can’t see it from the driver’s seat it will still drive me crazy.

 

So where exactly are you plugging in the dashcam? It looks like it is going into the rear of the mirror.
