Advice sought on 1999 2.7L for sale

I am trying to be smarter this time around, and seeking input on this truck for sale : 1999, 157k miles. Salesman agreed to $8300 and told me it has new brakes, front axles and starter. I want a 1st Gen, 2.7l, and manual trans. I could put down a deposit to hold, take a day off work, fly 2 hours, rent a car and drive to more hours to look at it. I've been looking for a few weeks and know what I want is a little rare, but i am in no hurry. Is this one worth it, or should keep looking?

$8300 seems just a bit high to me, considering the damage to the bed. Wouldn't be worth getting on a plane IMO.

I could never spend that much on that truck with damage to the bed sides especially not flying two hours renting a car and driving two more. Plus whatever distance it is back. You’ll be almost paying 10k I’m guessing by the time you’re done.

you’re in 2nd gen price range at that point.

 

That’s a little pricey IMO. It’s not that fully featured either, it’s got the 60/40 bucket seats and manual windows/locks.

Is that ADD or manual hubs? I don’t know if there are manual hubs hiding under the wheel caps.

Too much. That truck is worth around 7500$

 

Even for California where Tacomas are extraordinarily expensive, $8,800 is a lot of money for that truck. I don't even think mine is worth that much, and it's Supercharged/4WD/All power options/bucket seats. Also far less mileage, only 110k.

 

I love what some people will pay for .... certain... vehicles.

My two cents.... it’s way too much for what it is.

Tax title license will bring your overall cost up + renting a car.. flying ...

For something this old, damaged , and high miles.

Toyota Pickups and Tacomas in Cali often get sent over the border, they're extremely sought after in Mexico/Central America because of the lack of decent roads in most places. My old 1998 5-Lug was almost sold to a guy who was going to export it to Guatemala.

 

Yep. My dad used to have a Toyota pickup.. 88 I think, he gave it to a good friend of ours who sold it to a group of Mexicans for 1800$. They took it right to Mexico probably haha.
Also my friends cousin told me he would be taking it right to Mexico in Spanish. Good thing I know how to speak a little, now whenever the people at my local taco truck see me they always try to get me to sell them my truck. Haha

 

Way too much. There is a good project on CL in Phx @ $3500. 175K v6 5speed. needs front suspension and a paint job (black). I have friends in Escondido, nice place.

 

It does not really matter what others think a vehicle is worth it comes down in the end to what your willing to pay.

We all look at different things to decide

One just has to remember trucks born and raised in the Liquid brine world often end up in the Sunny Southern states

That bed is in much better shape then mine I was figuring by comments it was crunched from the cab to the tail lights to the point most of the tire was beyond the bed.

 

Agree with most above, it would need to be a V6 to get it to low 7s, what I see, engine compartment looks really good all cad plated fasteners and hardware still bright and shiny indicating truck operated in arid environment however screw type hose clamp on upper radiator hose vs constant pressure clamp, good maintenance is in the details, I know picky.
The SR5 and Tacoma badges are missing on the cab and the paint looks a little more crisp, did it get a quickie paint job and the bed got skipped because of the body work involved?
and the newer snowflake rims help doll it up as well, meaning dolled up for sale. Its not in $9000. condition in my opinion and no pic,s of frame but suspect good due to location.
Wait I see more, ground wire from firewall to valve cover not attached ? also hose clamp at heater control valve and control cable not hooked up to heater control valve, heater core leaking??? someone has been in there tinkering.
