    I was living in Chicago when I was in my early 20’s.

    I didn’t have any credit cards or even a checking account- every week I would take take enough money to live and deposit the rest for monthly expenses- rent, transit pass, and savings.

    There were times usually the day before pay day when I didn’t have any cash and not really any food in the apartment. On one such occasion, a beautiful Summer evening, I was hungry and didn’t feel like sitting around so I got on my bicycle and started riding.

    I went North and West- there were some very nice (rich) suburbs in that direction.

    I so clearly remember riding past a huge home and there were a bunch of kids around my age washing really nice cars, playing music, laughing and having a good time. I was thinking at that moment that what I was seeing was so far out of reach that I could never have anything like that.

    Funny how things work out- I was fortunate to have some lucky breaks and my wife and I have both worked hard to make a nice life.

    To this day when I see someone wasting food it really bothers me though.
