Just changed my rear differential fluid..

Oh wow! Well I got this truck used and it came with a warranty that also covers the driveshaft and u joints carrier bearings. I'm taking it to the independent shop tomorrow. I just told them it started making noises(chirping/squeaking at u joint) I didn't even mention I changed the oil. I just said that. They are going to diagnose it for free tomorrow

 

I hear ya bud.. For my truck it's another thing I'm worrying about

 

Hmmm.. Now I want to take it to the dealer. I did get a quote at a independent toyota repair shop for 300 to replace the u joint and they accept my warranty for warranty repairs. So I might go that route. But I do wonder what the secondary coverage on that toyota covers once the primary coverage is over (seems primary coverage ended last year on it) plus my truck is lifted now so I know toyota will give me shit for that and probably not warranty the work on the u joint on that secondary coverage

 

I bought a carrier bearing drop kit. But I don't think it'll work on my truck since I have a single line drive shaft I mean it was only 13 bucks but, Fook!

 

Roger that, glad to hear I don't need to tweak my maintenance tracker and return the oil.

 

Going to add this friction modifier for lsd. Unfortunately the parts store didn't have lubegard

 

Throw it in and see what happens.
If you don’t like the result, at least you know how to change the fluid now. Lol

 

Right?! I called the dealer and asked for the factory lsd fluid. They didn't have it. But I did ask if has to be conventional or synthetic and be said it doesn't matter either or. Idk if I should put value in what he said. But either way I'm going to put this friction modifier in and top it off I'll let ya'll know what happens

 

I find it better to ask the dealer,

“What THEY use”, not “What I CAN or SHOULD I use”

They dealer doesn’t much care what YOU use, they aren’t making money on the advice, parts, or labor.
They do care about what THEY do, because doing things TWICE is a loss of profit.

I have nothing against service writers, they tend to be more of a salesman than a Tech.
So, be prepared for “I don’t know, or an answer that makes no since”
If you are luck, and can find a Tech nice enough to help, they usually know the answers.
Just remember, time is money to a Tech, so keep it simple, and get to the point.

 

Yeah I called I should've asked for the part number for the bottle of factory lsd diff fluid. I'll call back tomorrow or another dealer. That way I can put thsy stuff in if I need to. I'll see how the friction modifier works. I already added it and topped my diff off

 

I used a different brand of friction modifier called sta-lube. I put the truck on level ground and out the friction modifier first. As soon as I was gonna empty the bottle it started to dribble out. I added a tiny bit of lsd diff fluid and for sure it was dribbling out. I went on a drive. No noises. I went in reverse all over up the street and no noises. I'm still going to take it to the independent shop tomorrow and have them look at my u joint since they're under warranty. I also am going to add a carrier bearing drop because I can see the drive shaft(both parts to the drive shaft) have different angles. And if need be Ill add washers to give it more drop. Those carrier bearing drop kits dont look to hard to install. I'll keep my ears posted for any unusual noises but so far so good. But like I mentioned I still want to replace the u joint. Why not

 

I’d post a “CB Drop vs Shim” question on the main forum.
It seems most of the time, Shims is recommended over the drop.
I’m not too up on my knowledge on that subject.
Are you getting any vibration issues? This is usually the reason most guys drop or shim.

 

I want to get the shims too. Can you send me a link of shims you have used? Or that thread maybe the thread had a link. Are the shims easy to install?

 

I’ve never used them.
That’s why is say, you should ask on the main forum.
The guys that know will probably see it there, this is a whole different subject.

My advice is don't mess with the carrier bearing drop or axle shims unless you feel noticeable vibrations. I'm lifted 4" in the rear and didn't need them.

While on the subject of service campaigns, did your truck have the leaf spring recall done? This is a NHTSA recall so it has no expiration date.

 

I just got the ome carrier bearing kit today too. And I do feel apprehensive installing it. The luck I have I know if i install it I'll have bigger problems even though it's not hard to install. I'll wait it out. I'm thinking of either taking the Driveshaft out or having this independent toyota shop doing it. And whoever take it out finding the angles on the pinion flange and same on the transmission and the Driveshafts too (I did an angle finder on my phone and found the propeller shaft and shaft after carrier bearing were 2 degrees off). My brother did give me a number to a guy who worked at toyota who tore out the rear suspension and fabricated everything to make it independent suspension (he may be on this forum) but my brother told me the techs at that toyota dealer shop refererred to him as the Tacoma god since he knows and worked on so many and modded them out. Hopefully he can help me I'd probably just pay him to do all my work for me.

But I didn't know these leaf springs were under a NHTSA recall!? For 2nd gen tacoma? I'll look it up
