@12TRDTacoma did this swap. dont think his has operable paddle shifting though.

Paddle shifters are a no as they require a full controller that our transmissions do not have and is a little too expensive and complex to do.

I did do this mod some time ago. Good luck studying wiring diagrams. It's a shitshow. Especially if you own a 12. I can get every button working for you except the back, left, right, and DISP buttons unless you have an OE radio.

This is NOT a straight across swap @bobsuruncle, so be prepared for some heartache. I will get back to you on this later today as I have work all day until 5.

I didn't take many, and most are of the cat. I started a new job yesterday and haven't had as much time to fuck around as I have in the past 4 months, so I haven't had a chance to go through the images I took.

I ssure am, grew up there. I’ve hiked in and out of there on back country trips in the winter and have a few buddies that snowmobile in to backside from the Nordic center once it’s open but I never really gave much thought to driving back there, makes perfect sense!
The snowpack was pretty good this year and the temps are low so I’m sure it’s sticking around.

how far did you say you got? You must be taking the cat track rout up? Is there a fs road that gets to the top in the summer?

Yeah, the few spare minutes I had to look at things last night left me planning to de-pin and get custom with things. I'm planning to do some wire continuity testing on each switch to get an idea of what's what before it heads back into the dash making my own wiring diagram essentially. Definitely have a wiring spaghetti hangover after looking over I don't know how many wiring diagrams last night, either from t4r/tundra with S mode, and then Corolla and Tacoma steering wheel controls, and common color use. :goingcrazy:

I initially thought the paddles wouldn't be too difficult, but knew it wasn't exactly going to be plug and play. Even though I have a 2012 t4r trans in my truck, I don't have a way to easily take control over the solenoids, and my ECU has NFC what to do. Leaving me with a few options that are not very high on the success side of things IMO.
1: Use a t4r/tundra ECU as a piggyback TCU for the S mode portion of things, but that gets murky quick when that ECU is going to be wanting feedback from sensors that are being used elsewhere. :Trainwreck:

2: Microsquirt gpio board and set it up so that when I move from D/5 - 4 with the shifter it would essentially simulate the t4r/tundras operation of S mode and take over the sequential shift duties triggering the solenoids for the requested shift.

I don't see a problem being able to trigger/actuate the shift solenoids, but there needs to be some sort of intelligent device to know what gear the transmission is currently in and which solenoids are on/off, so when a up or down shift is signaled it knows what to do to make it happen. I'd be willing to spend the few hundred more bucks for the MS TCU controller and make this work vs spending $2k for something like the computech and it doesn't even look factory.

I'm not expecting this to happen over a weekend, but I'll be brainstorming when my ADD allows it and trying not to overthink it. I mean it's not rocket science, but it seems like it is after looking at the Corolla wiring diagrams and it looks like it uses CAN to control the shifting in the manumatics/CVTi-S transmissions. :bananadead:

Yeah there’s a cat track leading all the way up! Theres a snow patch pretty low down on the track you have to cross but after that it’s clear until about half way up where there is another good size patch we didn’t attempt going over

You're on your own with the paddle shifters brother. Hahaha. That's requires too much brain energy on my part to be of any help with that.

@Usethe2nd you think Clint would sell me the ECU from Ashley's 4runner? :anonymous::rofl:

Hell, I'd only need to "borrow" it to run a few tests.

Oh I'm used to being on my own and tinkering with ideas. When friends ask me what I'm doing, and I start to explain, about right after I say wiring diagrams and de-pining blah blah not factory, but this car has it and it swaps into/fits my truck, they don't want to hear anymore lol.

Any info you would like to share regarding the steering wheel swap would be appreciated. When you have time.

Its always fun doing wiring on different vintage vehicles. Wiring on the FJ40...simple. Move up to the MR2...ehhh bit more complicated but not bad. Our trucks....lots more but still not toooo bad. New stuff with their million different sensors...f that

Today I'm rewiring connectors on a Dodge Dakota. I hate wiring as of lately. The connectors are so finnicky, but hey this is what I do. I'll let you know what I got when I get a chance here. :)

I gotta ask, why bother with the paddle shifters? Yeah it's cool to have something super unique. But if somebody took a short bed Tacoma and added 2" to the bed and it looked factory, you'd appreciate how much work it took, but does it really make any sense? Maybe if you had a turbo I'd get it.... hint hint
