Oil

My 2008 v6 4.0l has 102,900 miles on it and I was thinking of going to 10w 30 instead of 5 w 30. What do you guys think?

 

Does your owners manual say bump up the oil viscosity every 100k or so?

Time saving tip; no, it doesn't.

 

Wouldn't do it.....might cause oil leaks. Just make sure you change the oil regularly!

 

I'l assume you are either an lubrication engineer and have had the engine torn apart and all dimensions mic'ed,
OR
You torn the engine apart and mic'd all parts and know the new clearances, and a lubrication engineer recommended changing to heavier oil.

So, since you obviously have solid engineering advice for the change, go for it.

 

I just know a couple of people that do it with theirs. They said it causes less wear and lubes everything better. Don’t know if that’s true or not.

 

On what do you base their expertise? Their training and experience engineering and rebuilding engines, or their training and experience as lube engineers?

How do they know it causes less wear and lubes better? They must have torn down the engine and measured all moving surfaces before and after changing oil, right?

 

Don't re-invent the wheel here. Many Toyota engines go for a lot of miles going according to the manual - there's probably a reason for it.

I'm at 230k with changes every 5k. I think the engine is just about broken in now.

I'm not questioning you, I'm trying to get you to think.
Seems I hit a nerve, which shows me you realize your buddies have the same qualifications to determine engine oil specs for your engine as you do to perform the math required to get two satellites in the same orbit at different speeds but never meet.

 

Stick with REGULAR 5w-30 or 0w-30 synthetic or dino oil... when i say regular for the love of god, no "high mileage" oil please.

 

Don’t do it. Stay 5W30

 

The 'increasing viscosity' hack is something that dates back to 70s and earlier engines when a slight increase in viscosity would help take up some of the wear between various surfaces. With the the improvements in production, better metallurgy, and reduced tolerances in modern engines, this is no longer necessary or desirable.

 

Nevermind that they're asking questions that they think will help you. Sheesh.

 

I put some of the Mobil 1 "extended performance" 5W-30 in mine last oil change. Is that the type of oil you're talking about? I haven't heard of any issues with high mileage oil, which is why I ask.

 

I went with Mobil 1 synthetic because I heard it's one of the best options out there to protect the engine. I'm happy to be educated/proven wrong. Egos heal, trucks don't.
