Put 255/85/16s on stock OR wheels and suspension

I have a 255/85/16 Cooper ST Maxx on the steel spare and it fits just fine, barely. Not touching the exhaust either like in some pics in this thread

And I’ve run it on-road with no issues. No rubbing. Can’t speak for full-stuff off road. Worst case if somebody had a different suspension setup, you could always put the spare in the back and put a good tire with a regular wheel up front

 

I have no experience with studded tires but that does make sense

If these do better than stock then they should be fine for me. The stock tires sorta sucked on snow but they got me by

I was wondering the same I just figured that if the spare did rub, that it’d be good enough to limp out of whatever area and be fine until the flat was fixed
Was actually considering getting another pro rim that way I can do a 5 tire rotation?

 

yeah you'll be able to limp out no issues

So if you have 2 different tire sizes in the back say the 255 and the stock spare tire won't the ruin something with the driveline if they are not equal size and rotate? Just thinking about long travel highway use and getting a flat.

 

This week I installed JBA UCAs and 255/85R16s on my stock OR wheels. I have 6112s upfront giving me ~2" of lift. Lo and behold they are rubbing the JBA UCAs at full lock in reverse, and after searching this thread I have realized this is common and I should have known prior to my install. I wrongly assumed that if they fit stock suspension they would certainly fit aftermarket components since the JBAs provide added caster, but I never thought about rubbing the UCA itself.

Are spacers the only solution? Wouldn't that just put me in the same boat as if I went to a 285 width tire with issues rubbing the cab mount at that point?

 

had that exact question myself not too long ago...long story short, it’s not the worst thing in the world if you had to drive with the mismatched spare (since we’ve got open diffs) but if you can help it, get the matching size

What direction did you end up going? I too have the JBAs, discovered the rubbing after the fact and ordered Spitertrax spacers that are supposed to come next week.

 

I got told to come in here and regulate this thread or something, so here's a few things

1) The spirit of this whole thread is: I didn't know if it would fit, so I tried it. If you want to know if your spare wheel will fit, go put it on the truck. If it hits your UCA when you try to put it on, its no bueno. If not, it will be driveable for long enough to get your tire fixed.

2) You can use mismatched spares to limp out of places, I wheeled down a mountain with 1 33 and 3 35s after debeading once. It was lame, I don't recommend it.

Admitting I didn't search all 137 pages, how many have had to do a CMC with 255/85R16s? We just got in some KM3s what will go on a new 2020 TRDOR with ToyTec BOSS Aluma 2.5 series lift. Thanks all.

 

People who have had to cut have aftermarket wheels giving them issues for the most part.

With a lift, its more likely you'll have UCA clearance issues. Though if youre clearing them with your stock width, youll likely be fine with 255s.

 

You should be good with stock wheels. I'm running KM3s also with a 1.5" lift and no CMC with no issues.

 

so i see alot of you all have went with the 255/85/16 then lifted. Did you have issues which lead to lifting? Looking to run 255/85/16s but i dont really plan to lift am i going to have issues? I ran 255s on my second gen but i had a lift. Also how are the Maxxis Big Horns in the winter snow and ice?

 

Nah breh the whole point of the thread is that you can put these tires on a stock offroad 3rd gen with no issues and no need to lift. People lift or go to bigger tires cause they just want to keep building up the truck (at least that's what I did, and it's my world- you're all just living in it)

 

I lifted my truck because of issues unrelated to the tires. I wanted to add an AAL for better load carrying, which meant also lifting the front. The truck looks much better with a 2” lift on 255’s imo too; if I planned on staying stock height I think 265/75r16’s would have been better looking.

 

whats your 2" setup? im not against lifting i just dont want to do more than 2" and it may be a little while .

Looks great def going to be doing 2" down the road. 2 questions what mud flaps you running and whats your review on the maxxis tires?

The tires are great. They sing on the highway for sure. No traction issues in rain on pavement and I’ve had to deal with a couple muddy roads and they’re awesome in the slime DOT used to resurface our dirt road this year. I won’t have a winter report till October, hopefully.

Don't forget to retorque both your spacer nuts and lugs after 100 miles! I almost died a couple years ago going to a meet because my lugs worked loose on the spidertrax and 2 of the studs sheared. Was swapping rear suspension the night before and didn't stop and check them after a bit on the highway.

Having a rear wheel start wobbling at 75mph is...interesting.
