My friends and I are thinking of heading up to Gold Lake Campground in a few weeks. I was hoping to take a more adventurous route in instead of just doing the short trail from Gold Lake Highway. Does anyone know if Sierra Buttes Trail (aka Butcher Ranch Road) is open and passable from Sierra City to Gold Lake? I saw a couple of older threads about it but wanted to see if anyone's done it recently.

another way in is snake lake trail. its a legit trail though. damage is possible. butcher runs into it and that short piece from 93 may be open, not sure about the difficulty of it though, but dont see why it would be closed

Snake lake has some tough spots for sure. Also if you do decide to go the way, bring a chainsaw might be downed trees but I bet it’s been cleared already. There’s a group that maintains those trails.

Another option would be to head up to the Buttes past packer lake from the Gold Lake highway and along the ridge and down to the back side of Gold lake. Longer than just going around the lake, but shorter than all the way from Sierra City
On another note I've heard the Gold lake camp has exploded in popularity and you may have trouble getting a spot on the weekend which would mean backcountry camping at one of the other lakes over the ridge would be your next option.

So in that case I would just be jumping on Deer Lake Road right past Packer Lake?

I don't recall if a Truck fits all the way through that trail, for some reason I thought I recalled north of Deer lake that trail got too tight or overgrown(but I also havent been up on that ridge for probably 2 years now), but it may pass you all the way through. Otherwise you'd hop on the one labeled Buther Ranch road and then turning off at the intersection where it goes over to Gold Lake
