    Hi all

My dog goes just about everywhere with me and living in Los Angeles it gets hot! Is there a way to enable me to lock my doors via my remote while the engine is on with the A/C running for my pup? The truck has the tech pack so it's keyless.

    Thanks in advance

Are you able to use the emergency key to manually lock?

That’s a really unsafe and potentially life-threatening practice for your doggo. I get wanting to have your bff always with you, but the risks out weigh the reward. Unless you wanna buy a K9 heat alarm, which monitors your engine, battery and AC- it’s not worth the risk. Also depending on your location, could be illegal.

I assumed OP was running into a 711 or something quick. Otherwise you are 100 on the risk.

That’s a good point. Here in AZ we have way too many dogs left in cars by well intended people and the AC fails, or engine quits and it’s a nightmare.

Stop being selfish and leave your dog at home where they’re safe.

Yoooo! Relax there pal. My dog going everywhere with me if far from selfish. She has the best life and loves truck rides.

I think you’re jumping to conclusions:
    1. I would never and have never left her in the truck without the A/C at a nice cool setting
    2. If she’s left in the truck it’s no more than 1-15 minutes max
    3. She usually left listening to her favorite band Red Hot Chili Peppers or some Led Zeppelin

My current practice and always has been to just leave the door unlocked. But hey, sorry for reaching out in a truck forum to maybe find a better way. Oh, and thanks for your pet advice

I don’t know if your truck is equipped with this feature, but the Toyota Connect remote start will allow you to keep the truck running with a/c on. You would have to turn your vehicle off, exit, lock the doors, and then initiate the remote start. It will only stay on for 15 minutes and you have to pay a monthly or annual subscription fee. There is also a trick to start your vehicle remotely from the key fob that doesn’t require the subscription. I know it works on my 2020, but not sure on a 2018.

Don't be a jackass because we want to take our dogs with us. And leave them safely in the truck with the A/C running. If I don't lock the doors someone can jump in and steal the truck and dump my dog on the side of the road.

It's a valid question so get off your high horse - or do you leave them in your house in the summer heat. Douches.

Always happy to help. BTW, it doesn’t matter how long or short you leave your dog in the car for. Even on a temperate day, the inside of a vehicle will heat up like an oven in just a few mins. The advice has always been don’t leave your pets unattended in a vehicle, no matter how long it is.

Yes, I leave my dog in the house in the summer heat, with the AC on. I hope you’re seriously not comparing the thermodynamics of how a vehicle heats up compared to a house in the heat. If you think that’s an apples to apples comparison than I won’t even spend the time explaining the difference to you.

I understand your logic and it makes perfect sense. Cars can heat up 30+ degrees in a matter of 15-30 minutes. I suppose what needs to be considered is how much risk you are willing to take. I think the risk of having your dog in a running truck w/ AC on while you run inside somewhere to grab a sandwich or the store for 10-15 minutes puts your dog at very little risk, especially in the most reliable truck ever built:cool: shit, I do that with my wife in the truck:D now leaving your dog in a running car for an hour or while your working or something is completely ridiculous (Risk is much greater for AC or truck to stop working) but being responsible and not forgetting about your dog would be most important.

    You are an idiot!

If my truck is running and the AC is on 65 degrees and the windows are closed do think thats a threat to my dog for 15 minutes?

I'm a huge animal lover and advocate but you are absurd!!!

You can use your tailgate key or your key fob key to lock the truck while it’s running. But you might want to get the a/c TSB, 68-19 I think, done. I have left my dog in the truck with the a/c on only to come back to find warm air coming out of the vents. The TSB is for hot days, typically 100 degrees plus, the engine drive fan does not cool done the a/c coils enough and needs a supplemental electric fan to provide more cooling. The TSB is covered under the factory warranty, but may not be covered under extended warranties.

That’s great info! It never got above 80 where I live last summer and rarely ever does so I don’t have to worry about that. But I’ll definitely keep that in mind while traveling :D

It might depending on if AC fails (and how many minutes after you left), how hot it is outside, color or the paint and the interior trim, etc. When outside temp is 100F, a car under sun can heat up to 120F in 10 minutes. It is unlikely that a healthy young pup will die in 15 minutes due to that, but an older dog can. And even if your pup doesn't die, being trapped in a 120F box is not fun.

Your logic baffles me. Writing doesn't seem to be your issue, but maybe reading is. NOBODY ever said leave the dog in a vehicle that wasn't at a proper temp with continued cooling. Also, in case I wasn't clear i'm am talking about minuets while i grab stuff at a store. By your thinking, no more road trips to fun camping adventures because myself and my dog can bake to death in a running vehicle with the A/C. In fact, now we should rethink airplane travel because at that altitude and not sufficient cooling we could fry!

Not going to continue with this chatter because it seems you're just the type of person that likes to find a problem in everything and argue out of boredom or maybe you just enjoy it. You must be a blast at party's. Good day to you
