I've got an 01 extra cab I haven't been nice to. Bought in 02 with 1500 miles. I'm its 2nd owner. Anyway after changing the clutch out the last time I noticed a whine when there's no pressure on the clutch. It will also roll down hill if you try and leave it in gear while parked. This is its 4th clutch (lots of mudding) never have had the flywheel turned or changed. Also noticed the bearing coming out of the trans in the bell housing seemed to be weak with a little play. Is it a combination of the flywheel or that no named bearing?

Most times it is the clutch release bearing that makes noise with no pressure on the pedal

The pilot bearing should not be affected by pedal pressure but strange things happen.

Your truck rolling down hill is a sign your compression is getting low besides that is what your parking brake is for.

Don`t let anyone else drive your Truck you should make it.

It only took 5 miles to cook a decent clutch

Here in CA a dealership clutch job on a 1st gen goes for about 3 grand. Independent shops anywhere from $700 - 2000, varies quite a bit

Dealers are always high. Nissan wanted 3300 to do shocks and breaks on wifes Titan @ 3-4 days. I did it for $550 in 2.5 hrs. Got pre loaded struts. I've always done my own work on my toy for that reason.

We quit going to them all together because of that. The wife had taken to them religiously for oil changes, "safety" inspections, and even tires. When I went to take the driver rear tire off I couldn't get the lug off, just kept spinning. With some redneck ingenuity finally got it out. It was the wrong lug all together. Didn't fit the stud and was almost to wide to fit in the wheel. When I went in and tried to talk to them about it, they said "the tires have been on there for a year. Your problem not ours!" Thought I was gunna have to be escorted out lol

My 1996 clutch replacement using new Borg-Warner (not re-manufactured) parts was right at $1000.
I'd recommend staying away from re-man clutches.

Me either... Sounds like remanufactured brake pads lol. I looked it up though and sure enough it's pretty common actually

When you get into Heavy duty Truck parts Relined Brake Shoes were quite common .

I knew a kid my age that worked for his dad they relined the Shoes for all the local cement haulers .

    Reman Clutch discs as well

Mine did the same thing for about 5 years in between 3rd and 4th clutch. When I changed the clutch out last time I used high temp gasket seal around the gasket. Hasn't leaked since and that was back in 2011.

Yes, I owned/operated a chain of auto parts stores for years and sold both new and re-manufactured clutch disc and pressures plates and reman outsells new by far, obviously because of price.
Personally, I prefer NEW as defect rate is far less.
