Easy up fella's... The OP just asked a legitimate question. Back in the day this was a common practice as was previously mentioned. It's not necessary now....

You need to do your homework. Taking as gospel your friends uneducated opinions is not wise, it’s more like the blind leading the blind. If you truly have questions and want to learn go to this website.

Ran Supertech 5w-30 in my 1st and 2nd gen. It’s cheap oil that meets what Toyota calls for. They have a combined mileage of about 570k. You can do it if you’d like in a warm environment. If you experience winter, just stick to 5w-30 like you have been. It’s not rocket surgery. Keep oil in the truck, and change it at proper intervals.

My 2.7L with a little over 114K is using a quart or so every 3,000-3,500 miles; The owner's manual recommends 0W-20, but prior to 2010, the owner's manual recommends 5W-30 for the 2.7L...

In the interest of stopping the "blow-by", I am switching to 5W-30 at my next oil change. Unless your truck is using oil or the conditions it faces call for a heavier oil, I'd stick with 5W-30 :)

Also, it seems like 5W-30 has been the go-to across the board until 2009 or so; My friend's '04 with the 3.4L uses 5W-30...

0w-20 is only recommended for mpg purposes, not engine wear or oil consumption. You’d be fine with it. Your same engine elsewhere in the world can use other viscosities.

Yep you’d be fine with any 5w-30.

I can't believe it uses that much. That seems like a lot to me.

I’ve been told it’s normal, by two different mechanics, my uncle who used to be a mechanic, and another uncle who is not a formally trained mechanic but has been restoring cars for the better part of four decades...

Interesting. Has it always used that much? My accord w 230k doesn’t even use that much.

No, I’d say it started shortly before 110K; The first time it was discovered to be a quart low was shortly before 110K, and it was discovered to be almost a quart low again at 113,500. I’ve put over 700 miles on it since then and the oil level has remained consistent.

Maybe it'll level out there and not increase. Definitely something to keep and eye on

Trust what the Toyota engineers say and stick with that.
