    They're a joke.

The "real" frame caps you can get are MUCH larger and cover the entire side of the frame for like a foot or two in front and behind the trouble spot, and actually provide strength, assuming there is enough good material for them to weld to. Those little chunks of flat bar just cover up the wholes.

That said, even the frame caps aren't ideal, because liker I said they generally rust from the inside out. So unless you address and prevent the rust on the inside, the caps will simply delay the inevitable.

You might consider expanding your search to prerunners.

They are essentially identical to the 4x4s, and the conversion is relatively straight forward. Easily done for under 2 grand, if you take your time looking for parts and sell your swapped parts, it can be done for a grand, maybe less.

Nah, there's no body lift. you can see there aren't spacers on the bed in the pic showing the frame "patches".

You don't need a body lift to fit 35's. All you gotta do is trim the fenders.

There are people running 35's at/near stock height. You just gotta tub.

They're even more out here, but well worth it if you find one with a solid frame. Be patient and you can find a better truck.

Normal Truck for it`s age in that part of the world.

Your going to need to keep after the frame and play catch up with the areas lacking maintenance.

My truck looks just like this maybe worse after 1 winter with everything painted underneath in the Fall.

With no one buying these trucks you would think they would go for just over scrap price . Yet they hold their value.

If you are planning on heading out west especially, I'd pass on it. If you can, nose around Boise for a deal. I bought 2 good double cabs - with no rust - out there when I couldn't find any around here (southern Oregon), and every time I check availability, I find some good ones over there.

That's pretty hairy, I'd pass on that one if I were you. Can't see much frame in those new photos but at least this section of the crossmember has rusted through, so I'd expect more throughout the frame.

Some people are ok with that but it's a deal breaker for me.

I Don't know where you are coming from, but this one is on the WI/MN border. https://shiftedmn.com/collections/wholesale/products/2001-toyota-tacoma-double-cab-4x4-trd I didn't go down to see it, but they sent me some pics. It was supposed to have its frame replaced but the pics didn't really look like a new frame so I picked up another one with a new frame closer to me. Might be worth looking at though. Perhaps the new frame was ordered for it but it wasn't ever replaced? If someone has access to the Toyota records for it it might be interesting to see.

Edit: They are asking $6878 for it.

I paid $7500 for my 2003 DC 4x4 TRD with 250000 miles in Memphis, TN about 9 months ago. No frame rust and nothing really needing work except worn out suspension. If a trusted mechanic says it looks good I'd say buy it!
