First boat coming

We're looking at either a pontoon or v-hull boat possibly fairly soon. The max weight including trailer will be around 3000+ lbs. The trailer will have brakes. What weight distribution hitch should I get? The Tekonsha P3 gets good press here so I'll get that. What else do I need (the truck has the towing package)? I've towed a couple of times before but I'm a novice at it. Thanks

 

Depends on total weight of boat and trailer. 3000 to3500lbs I don’t think you need a wdh. Doesn’t hurt to get one but not really needed. You really don’t need anything else. You have brakes and the Tekonsha is a good controller. If you get into 4000 lbs and above then you may want some extras like wdh and others.

 

What kind of brakes are on the trailer? Boat trailers usually have surge brakes because electric brakes and water submersion don't mix well. Surge brakes won't work with weight distribution hitches as far as I know.

 

The beam for the 16' pontoon we're looking at is 85". That leaves about 1'+ on each side beyond the width of the truck. Has anyone towed with stock mirrors and this much overhang? Do I need to go with the extended towing mirrors? Boat on trailer will come in at just under 3000 lbs, so I figure we add another 1000 lbs with me & passengers & gear fully loaded.

 

You can buy WDH's that work with both electric & surge brakes but I agree with Sprig on possibly not needed one. I don't see them often on boat trailers.

OP - be careful. If you've got 1000 lbs of people & cargo you are likely going to exceed your trucks payload. Check your door sticker.
