not in a quantity that will make a difference. If you see what an FI vehicle does, it’s a good amount more. I apologize, i did phrase that incorrectly.

 

They are great...... for extracting money from your wallet.

They aren't needed. You'll likely sell the truck or rebuild the engine before seeing its positive attributes.

You might forget to dump it before it fills and causes a problem. You're adding unnecessary risk by installing one.

People like to show all the crap they collect. Normally, that stuff just gets burnt away.

 

Everybody is going to have strong opinions about catch cans, oil types, maintenance intervals, we could go on and on. I'll just say this...I have a catch can on my Tacoma and what I drain out of it every few thousand miles is not anything I would ever want re-circulated into my intake and down through the engine. Is it going to add any life to my engine, NO I don't believe it will honestly but it can't hurt. It's like anything man it's how you feel about it and what it's worth to you. My wife eats organic as much as possible, I don't taste or think there's really that big of a difference but it makes her feel good so she's into it!

At the end of the day my recommendation is this... Go blow $20 on a cheap ebay catch can and run it for 5k miles and drain it, if you think its a waste no big deal if not you can upgrade to something nicer.

Don’t disagree with your stance on catch can and Tacoma (ignoring incline), but think your original post was a bit misleading. Blow by on FI cars is not an issue with rail injection, and catch cans are / can be beneficial on non FI cars with direct injection. Direct Injection is kinda the issue. your dumping nasty shit into the engine through the valves, port / rail injection will clean that nasty shit off the back of the valves forcing it to be burned in the cylinder, where as direct injection won’t, it just leaves a nasty build up mess on your valves. Many (if not all) engine manufacturers got caught out with this problem (and some others that came with direct injection), and had huge repair bills (including Toyota). My understanding is the mix of DI and PI is this particular engine is their way to overcome some of those issues that come with DI.

 

so....just read that entire thread (toward the end was damn funny with the smart girls vs bimbos). The catch can DOES NOT fix it. It seems like it is more of oil pooling up around the rear of the engine problem which we share with most every truck.

So....do what you want OP. I am still seeing zero reason for a catch can

 

Yes. VW/Audis were notorious with their carbon buildup, especially those that weren't run hard enough to burn off the carbon. This is why we have the self cleaning cycle that runs occasionally when the truck is off.

Exactly, and you don't need to spend $100 or more for one. I got one from Amazon for $31 canada and to be honest it's a good value. My truck is red and so is the catch can.
When I started looking for the best value I browsed AliExpress and Alibaba. Some are cheaper yet and color options. If purchased in bulk price drops down to $13and they will even engrave any logo...funny thing is that a certain $150 can looks a lot like an under $20...just saying, so I'm fine with generic...I may slap a TRD decal on it at some point...It may not have the brass filter but hey saving $100 is saving $100 that i can spend on something else !

Do you need a catch can? No. You don’t even need one with FI unless you are really over boosting this truck.

My intake was fully doused in oil when I replaced the lower and upper intakes to put on my SC. The oil doesn’t really hurt anything though. The engine is designed for it.

I put a catch can on anyways because it was fun and easy to do for $25.



I used an existing m6 bolt hole by the air box and used a bracket that was removed during my supercharger install.

 

Our S/C manufacture also said stopping the blow by from getting into our systems was a very good idea.

 

The catch can debate has been going on for 50 years (or more) with PCV systems.

the installation guide on our S/C does not mention any PCV modifications. To me it means the engineers deemed it unnecessary to mention unless someone asks. I take it as “it doesn’t hurt.” of course I do imagine oil build up on the CAC would stifle a bit of heat transfer over time.

I’ve done some tests on my race car that has some crazy blow by. Venting my PCV to atmosphere vs into the intake caused 0% change to my AFR and didn’t cause pinging even with my timing right on the edge of where pinged with it vented to atmosphere.
I have a set up on that car now that drains the oil back into the head while letting the water vapor and pressure out.

I installed the JLT, it catches some (a little) liquid oil and gunk that otherwise would go in the manifold. Will it keep the intake cleaner? I dunno, seems like it but no science on that. Super easy to install. Looks stock!
