Autozone and Advanced Auto parts will clear them for you...and tell you the code that caused the damned thing!

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
I believe they won't do that any more in Commifornia. The best bet would be to find someone local on the board who will read it for you............then buy them a beer.

Last time it was the gas cap code but the gas cap was tight. I can't remember the code but it can also be another part of the fuel system but I can't remember that either. LOL

    Welcome to California!!!!!!

I just went through this. CA passed a law that says something to the effect that a non-ASE certified person cannot offer advice, or interact with a customer regarding CEL's. The same law somehow states what a store can and cannot loan as a tool, yet they are still allowed to sell the tool. It was complete BS when I heard that. I think <meaning my opinion> a bunch of ASE mechanics got their panties in a bunch because DIY mechanics were able to fix stuff without paying for their services and the companies that produce the scanners were only interested in fighting enough to protect their business which wasn't being helped by the rental stores anyway.

I was told that some Pep Boys will help you out because they have mechanics on staff, but I got pissed and just bought my own scanner.

Good point and well said. I also bought a scanner about 2 years ago...and it has proved very usefull......diagnosed sensor problems.....which can be bought cheaper over the net. Paid for itself in the first use!

I got the Innova Equus 3120....but WalMart is advertising a 3100 for about $60....also...you can get one for under $30 that will tell you code and reset the CEL.
    Good thing to have around.

Disconnect the negative cable on your battery for about 2 minutes and that will reset the CEL. If the light comes back on then you know you have a problem. Just this weekend I was with a guy and he was airing up his tires using his compressor powered by his battery. When we left his CEL came on. We stopped at a gas station, disconnected the negative cable and it never came back on.

You can also pull the EFI fuse and it will do the same thing.
