What’s your average mpg?

I’ve been reading some of the threads about tires and people are complaining that when they get bigger tires they drop from 19 down to 17 mpg or so but I’m regularly seeing 16 mpg with stock size street tires. Is there something I should check for mpg? I regularly check mpg and have never seen anything over 17 in the last year I have owned the truck. Everything is maintained well. Wheel bearings feel good, although I am replacing the fronts in a few days to install manual hubs, and will shortly do the rear bearings and seals as preventative maintenance since the truck just hit 234,000 miles. Any ideas? I don’t drive crazy or fast. Not super concerned as I figured the 16.5 I average was fine for a 20 year old truck but if something is not right I want to fix it. It’s a v6 extracab with 4.10. Anyone with the v6 wanna share your mpg?

 

I get about 18mpg give or take depending on terrain with heavier 285/75/16 (32.8") tires. That's a v6 with a manual trans, I have a fairly light foot on pavement unless I'm passing.

 

That seems really good for that size tire! I should have mentioned I have Hankook dynapro ht 265 70 16r tires they weigh like 36 pounds, but I have heavier steel wheels. I have the automatic

With E rated 285/75/16’s and armor/mods. Regear wil definitely help the mpg back to upper teens.

 

I am happy with my 10 to 12 mpg the few times I checked back when I first bought the truck

Then it seldom gets driven with out a load and quite often Towing something as well

The loads above the cab really reduce the fuel mileage.

I’m trying to focus on the positives these days so I don’t track my trucks mpgs.
It’s got 255/85/16 mud terrains on steel wheels, golf cart batteries, an extra gas tank, armor, winch and a camper that sticks up over the cab.
I’d guess I get 13mpgs on a good day.

My car gets about 33mpg and my motorcycle gets 47.7 mph.
I focus on those two fuel consumption wise.

 

I'm getting around 17-18 averages. I don't peel off from a dead stop. I try to keep my RPM's under 25 hundred when I'm accelerating. On the Highway I'm getting 21, wish it was better, but these trucks weren't designed to be a honda civic.

 

Are you going to regear?
I’m thinking 4.88’s this fall.

 

95 ext cab, V-6, 257,000, 4x4, auto, manual lockouts, 245/75/16s on 3rd gen wheels, and 3:91 gears = combined 19mpg. Normally no load except fiberglass bed cover.

FYI, my 2.7L gets 1-2mpg less. It is geared a bit lower and has ADD FR diff actuator, otherwise very similar truck.

 

I don't have a 1st gen anymore, but I was getting 16-18 with a lift and 33" tires.

 

On average -
15.15 towing
20.1 mixed city/hwy
21.31 hwy

Some tanks have been as high as 23.8.

235/75/15 tires and 4.30 gears

We'll see what it does now that I don't have a burnt valve

 

Bought this used 2003 Basic Cab "Certified" from Toyota dealership in 2006 with 59K on it. 14 years later... 97K... 21MPG City, 24MPG Highway. Repairs....Gas, Oil, Brakes, Tires. Nuff said.

 

So far I’m on the same plan.

 

I’m planning on ECGS and doing the work myself.
Still debating front locker while I’m at it.

Well your down there, might as well go Johnny tsunami (go big or go home). Currently debating the DIY or having a shop knock it out. Did some crude math and estimated with the slight increase in mpg it will take 50k miles till it pays for itself. If the job was done by a shop.

 

I like that math.
I was debating have a shop do it for a while. I may have to reconsider my ECGS plan.

Edit: also the idea of just dropping my truck off and picking it up when it is done is very appealing.

 

1998 xtra cab 3.4 5MT: 20 mpg (adjusted for the 31" tires)

2004 DC 3.4 AT: 17 mpg

Hopefully the lighter wheel/tire set up I'm about to put on the 2004 will help out with the fuel economy. Just changed the plugs, wires and cleaned the MAF so we'll see if that has any effect also.
