Expensive rings are a waste of money. I think we'll all look back on this in 50 years and say, "wow I can't believe people used to do that".

Truly it doesn't matter what ring you buy a woman if she isn't happy with it she is going to be ungrateful about it. The amount of money you spend won't matter. Did you know they have a ring shaming group on Facebook where women post pics of rings and trash talk them and the men that bought them. Way shallow stuff that is.

Yeah he knows the answer. 8 years and no ring isn't just because.
    Enjoy the truck parts.

There would just be another place to do the same probably. The fact that such a group existed says a lot about the what some value.

Definitely the ring, more like the relationship. Sounds like you are resisting turning the corner in your life where your resources can no longer go exclusively to your hobbies. I fought it, too. 6 cars in 8 years is not cool or funny, it is terrible money management. If you marry her, you would be smart to run financial decisions through her. Understand that your money becomes her money, so it will no longer be about cars and mods.

Don't do something ridiculous and take a loan out for a ring. If she wants a expensive ring, I'd have a serious talk with her and if that doesn't change her mind, examine other patterns in her life and decide if she is too material oriented (which you may seem to be from her perspective, what with 6 cars in 8 years and all).

$1200 traditional style diamond engagement ring and $400 for both of our wedding rings from jewelrybyjohan.com. They have a lot of unique stuff. Ours are dyed wood and titanium and cut from the same block.

Since this is a car enthusiast forum, everyone will joke about it, but seriously, if you think your life should still be about buying a new (to you) car every 14 months, maybe don't even bother getting married.

Meh, buy her whatever she wants. If it means waiting on a new truck or parts for said truck then so be it.

You can get an extremely nice ring if you don't waste your money on a worthless rock from a cartel that spends more than anyone else on advertising to trick you into throwing your money down the toilet.

Diamonds are worthless, they aren't rare, and they are worth absolutely nothing. Rubies, emeralds, just about anything is rarer and more valuable and a better use of your money than a diamond.

    https://www.gemsociety.org/article/ten-gemstones-rarer-than-diamond/

Diamonds are worth less than half of what you paid for them 10 minutes after they swipe the credit card at the same retailer. Get a one carat CZ if you think she won't back down on the diamond thing, no one can tell. If anyone tells you they can tell, they are full of crap. Also, they are free if you get a ring at just about any jeweler.

Diamonds have NO value. Seriously, there are millions of things that would be better to spend your money on.

If your man/woman loves a shiny piece of stupidity more than you; then you should get the truck and get rid of them.

Just my personal opinion, and we all know how those go.. but from the female side of the fence: you should be able to get married and stick a freakin elastic band on her finger and her be happy. Materialistic af and weird of her to give an ultimatum like that.

My husband and I were together 5 years, he proposed on his own accord, and got me a gorgeous opal ring. I mentioned my great gram having one when I was a kid and how upset I was that I wasnt able to find it after she passed, he remembered and now it has a cool back-story. That and he proposed over comms while we were both hang gliding in Florida so that was freakin awesome.

Every single female I showed it to, first response: HE DIDN'T GET YOU A DIAMOND?! And/or asking how much he spent. Wtf? o_O I never asked, I don't honestly care, and I barely wear the thing because I'm a mechanic/technician and smash my hands up constantly.. I wear a plain silver band that my great grammy gave me when I was 13 that holds it's place. He didn't have to get me a damned thing and I would've been fine with it. I got him a ring in return (he picked it, idk squat about dude-rings) and we're happy as hell. No wedding, no paperwork, no ceremonies, just he and I doing our thing.

I went through 3 vehicles in the last 5 years and my husband never gave an ultimatum nor said diddly shit about me purchasing things for myself..

Marriage is like a fart: if you have to force it, it's probably shit.

The answer should never be the ring. If I have to buy you things to make you love me then you really don't love me and will leave me the instant things get hard. Displaying your love with money only gives her more incentive to find someone with more money. Love is not about money.

You can get a nice gold wedding band for a hundred bucks, and dudes increasingly want tungsten bands which are dramatically more durable and dramatically cheaper.

I haven't worn my wedding band since the first year, its just something to get screwed up when working on cars and fixing stuff. I got a platinum band, let me tell you that it was a complete waste of money but its only worth the weight of the metal, its otherwise worthless.

Make sure you get a pre-nup. Make sure it says that you will not share "marital effort" which means your salary is yours and hers is hers and any contributions will remain your own.

I've heard this a lot but never an explanation-how is marriage a contract with the government? From what I can tell, it's a legally binding contract with your spouse. The marriage certificate just gets it in public record.

And pre-nups-what a great way to start your new lifelong commitment... with a list of conditions and protections for yourself. I think if you feel that's a good idea, you either know you havent chosen the right person or don't trust your own judgement. The quality of any relationship, in my experience, seems to be based on time, vulnerability and availability. I can see the argument for pre-nups, but I don't think it's as good as the argument against them.

Not to get too serious or presumptive, but she just spent the last 8 years dating a dude who bought 6 cars during that time. You think either should make financial decisions or she be judged harshly for being the material oriented one in the relations ship? 8 yrs, I'm guessing it's not one sided. I'm also guessing (hoping) the OP isn't really looking for TW to give him serious life advice here.

Nope, I think everything should be considered. We don't know a lot of the circumstances. They both have their reasons for staying in this situation, but that is probably beyond the scope of a TW thread.

Also, I don't think you read my post very carefully and just boiled it down to a couple absolutes.

All my rigs are purpose built. From crawling to camping. I also enjoy a nice stock truck for what that’s worth. Toyota’s are the jam!
She will love you even more in a truck modded like a boss!
If it were me, I would buy her a 4runner instead of the ring. That’s what I did lol

Like I said, I was not trying to get too serious, as I hope the OPs take on most of the replies won't be taken too seriously either.

I hope he gets some cool parts.
