That's fair. They are probably overkill.

My major point of contention is that they aren't an invasion of privacy because of the fact that a person chooses to fly. But these scanners are most likely an unnecessary expense.

As for the airline business -- that's where the major policy changes can be made. If these scanners truly affect airline business, then the airlines will lobby for changes to the regulations. This is where America is awesome. If you don't like something, you can choose not to fund it (e.g. -- air travel). When enough people stop paying for certain things, changes are made to bring customers back.

I like how you're trying to go against my point while making it for me. ;)

Since no singular action will stop all future attacks, and clearly we've already invested plenty of cash into airline security, and clearly it has been working, why invade our privacy further and spend more money in airline travel?

How about we look at the other avenues of attack, instead, as well as increase our ability to respond in the event of a successful attack?

Instead, we're losing our privacy hammering at a mostly-solved problem for no reason. Further expensive technological improvements in airline security are stupid because we've already made plane-related attacks obnoxious enough that the terrorists are clearly looking elsewhere.

You are correct. We are reactive- and at the same time working to the best that anyone can expect to prevent further incidents (like the recent Yemeni package intercept).
I do agree that it's stupid to drive versus fly...but I have no problems with the way the current system works (as far as getting to a plane...the actual flight is a different thing all together) so I fly regularly. That is my choice...Much like it's your choice to not drive.

Thank you. I do raise a little contention with the idea that you don't have to fly, because, there isn't a real alternative to travel to Europe or cross-country. If this were something a specific airline implemented or we had low-orbit space travel (i'm being serious) and I had other real options to get to Italy or New York, I'd agree that I am making a choice to fly.

And I suspect there will be exactly the backlash you describe, as airlines, AFAIK, have indeed been seeing profits drop as flying has gotten more cumbersome.

Anyway, good talk guys, glad we could keep it civil. I need to do work. At my job.

but the problem is not solved. The processes, be they technological or procedural, must stay one step (at least) ahead of those trying to circumvent them. If we rest on our security laurels because they worked yesterday, then by tomorrow, someone will figure out a way to work around them.

Terrorists are looking elsewhere because it is easy to do so. Say that we ignore security at airports and focus on trains, it will only be a matter of a short time before they start attacking planes again.

Another thing to look at is that some of you are saying that your right to privacy supercedes someones right to life. You don't want a hand on your balls, so joe terrorist puts a bomb there and has denied many people the right to life. If you want to think of it as a consistutional right thing.

I start work with the TSA here in about 2 weeks and I will be honest and say that this is a matter of safety for all those on and not on the plane. I understand that some people feel violated, but I honestly feel that it is important as to strengthen the security at airports. My best guess is that something happened where a normal search just wasn't good enough. If you have nothing to hide, why would the images and searches really be an issue? Unless you just aren't comfortable with other people touching you I guess..

Have to jump in. The "if you've got nothing to hide" line of logic is complete, utter, disgusting BS. I don't have to have anything to hide to not want what is effectively nude images of myself being taken or to have my genitals groped by some minimum wage stranger. No, thank you.

Actually, it's the reverse. You know how you're supposed to die if you were to look directly into the face of God?

My enormous, awesome dong is sorta like that, and I'm looking out for the safety of all TSA employees. ;)

I think your only supposed to take 1. By saying "Some", it leads me to think you may be considering taking multiples. This might not be a good thing. Side affects are reported as "Blindness", and a 4+ hour erection.....I think the last thing I would want to deal with at an airport, is a blind dude with a fucking 5 hour erection wandering the airplane.....

I wonder if there are any regulations against requesting that the search be performed in public?
