wanted my spare to match my wheels/tires (BFG 285 70r 17 on OEM 4runner trd pro wheels), i know theirs been other post but in case someone searching for this exact setup i hope they find this post. it fit perfect, like others have said all required was to push back the tabs that hold the original size spare in place. i used a rubber mallet to hit it to move more out, it was very easy and only took a few hits. when i lift the tire back up, i just try to hold it as close to the hitch as it rises to give plenty room from the diff (theirs a spot on the diff in the photo of rubbing but that was when i was testing fitting and hit the diff doping the tire, theirs lots of space between tire and diff) the exhaust was about 1/2 away from the tire, i drove for few hours and it didn't get that hot, at least not hot enough that i think it would be an issue but to be on safe side i just added some titanium exhaust wrap for piece of mind.

i plan to move the tire lift mechanism a inch closer to the rear so that i don't have to hold back the tire while someone lifts it up. but other than that, it doesn't hang low, and good to know for emergencies i have a matching spare and still keep my bed space.

I just did the exact same thing today. I came to update a thread and saw this one and thought "That's exactly what I was going to post!". The only differences were that I used a 3lb hammer to move the tabs back, I mounted a Toyo Open Country AT III as I'm pretty sure that will be my next set of tires, and I won't be moving the lift mechanism as I'm happy w/ the fit. It was very simple/easy.

Pics are the view from the back, how it sits next to the exhaust, and how it sits next to the diff.

    Update:

just went on a 4 1/2 hour drive and at the end of the trip, I touched the exhaust where I have the wrap, it was just warm to the touch, tire was normal temp closest to the exhaust. So safe to say it will not cause any issues to the spare being that close, again I have that part wrapped, not sure the temp on unwrapped exhaust.

Do you have a long-bed or short-bed? Looks like a decent solution.

I'll be doing this next weekend.. Whats the cheapest spare rim that'll clear 285's mounted up and not hitting upc's with the wrong offset? I'm assuming the cheap black rim the truck comes with won't clear with a 285?

If you're looking to use a cheap spare rim, like me, just plan to use the spare only as a rear tire. Otherwise it's difficult to find the right offset. You might wind up rotating your tires on the roadside for the cost-saving trouble, but you avoid the risk of tearing up an expensive spare rim that lives indefinitely underneath the truck.
