I read this on another forum. You can skimp on the jack, as you are never under the vehicle when lifting it. But never skimp on the jack stands. Makes sense. I bought a nice set of stands from Northern Tool, they sure look well built. I hope I'm right. When I was in high school, a schoolmates dad was under his boat working on it. My schoolmate came home to find his dad crushed to death, a jack stand had failed. I've remembered that ever since.

Its always better not to trust jackstands with your life...have a back-up even if it damages your truck if your truck falls on it.

I just returned mine Friday. They offered to replace with a new set or gift card.
    I took the card.

Why didn't you accept the cash refund?

They didn't offer cash. I bought a pole saw with it anyway.

I saw a pretty good YouTube video. The one I saw highlighted how the seams were not welded in the best way.

What’s a good jack from a major retailer?

Does it have to be a major US retailer? I got these shipped directly from US Jack. One of the few USA sourced materials and assembled jack stands out there. Spring loaded double engagement pawl too.

I haven't checked my stands yet but probably need to.

I always pull my wheel(s) and place them under the rocker when working under my cars, even if i don't need to pull a wheel for the work.

I figure if the stand fails or slips then the wheel and tire will catch it. With that being said, it might still knock me out with a blow to the head, but it shouldn't crush me

Had 4 of the 3 ton and 4 of the 6 ton. All bought between 2002-2010. Took them to my local HF last week and they gave me a store credit.

I did the same. Took the store credit home and went on their website and bought as much non-HF branded stuff as I could (Stabil, WD-40, MacGuires, Gunk etc). I'm done with the HF stuff.
