Why would Toyota change the type and location of the oil filter on the 3rd gen? it was perfect where it was on the second gen, on top of engine. now its just filter media in a plastic casing wtf?? and on bottom of truck. step backwards no??

Works fine me, and a couple million others.
Most Vehicles have been coming with cartridge style filters for some time now, I think to reduce waste. Again, most modern Vehicles have been using composites over metal, to reduce weight.

    Also, the earth isn't flat

I get that, it does feel like a step backwards, but it's definitely more environmentally friendly. Que Sera, Sera I suppose

    I agree

I replaced mine with the metal canister. Still not nearly as convenient of location as on the 4.0 though.

Metal canister and fumoto drain valve makes it much easier and not near as messy. Hardest part is getting that aggravating skid plate off. But I do agree, the 2nd gens had it going on as far as oil changes go.

Filter for filter, the cartridge wastes less material and you can examine the filter to see bits of metal more easily. Definitely an improvement. Having to remove the skid pan and go under to get to it, not so much.

It's not that big a deal and no, it's not a step backwards.

Plus, filter being on the bottom and upside down?(mounted correctly from an engineering stand point) means 1-2 sec less time when there is no oil pressure on startup as it fills the filter with oil. Top mount filters typically drain empty when not running and oil has to be pumped to top of the engine and fill the filter before the crank is pressurized.

Also the oil change interval is half as often now as compared to the 4.0.
