I don't think I've ever heard it put that way, but I must agree with you.

What after-market headlights are those? I'm considering upgrading the lighting on my 2008.

ebay/cheap aftermarket lights won't have increased output/better vision than stock headlights.

Dumb question but I'll ask anyway...

I know there is alot of information out there about lighting upgrades but much of it is above my skill-level and understanding. To do it "right", what is the best method of doing so - complete component swap-out, i.e. new headlight, tail-light, and fog-light assemblies? Or, since is it an older Tacoma (2008), will this not be worth the hassle and be problematic for the rest of the truck's life?

Depends on the condition of your assemblies/goals. If you can clean them up have at it or replace. For lighting improvement don’t just throw led/hid in the oem housing you need a proper projector lens other wise you’ll be blinding everyone. I went what’s called the ultimate headlight upgrade Is just a piggy back harness that plugs into the oem one with higher rated bulbs. It greatly increases the lumens while maintaining the oem cutoff its affordable and functional. Here’s the thread on it.

Keep your current housings, they look fantastic. If you want drop in solution, buy the expensive headlamps from auto parts store. The brighter the lamp, the less time it will last. Or go with Matt's solution for ultimate headlight mod for brighter output.

They're the Spyder/Tcmabeast ones. They look good but the light output sucks unless you upgrade the bulbs/projectors and the build quality is not as good as OEM. If your stockers are good I would highly recommend that you stick with those and either do the ultimate upgrade that @MattCowsmasher posted or a quality HID/LED projector retrofit. I purchased mine before joining this site as my factory lens had tons of cracks in them. If I were to do it over again I'd do a proper retrofit with factory housings.
