It's a place to start. If the truck is off you can see if the valve holds vacuum. If it doesn't, replace it.

    Interesting...

If only the high pressure fuel pump was pooched, you'd think the truck would still idle though. The engine uses the port injectors at idle unless the DI cleaning cycle is active (yes, I've seen this via techstream).

There was a thread on here where the member's truck would sputter/cough/ shit the bed when trying to accelerate, but would idle fine. It turned out that the HPFP wasn't installed properly after replacement due to chirp IIRC.

Pooched low pressure pump/ancillary stuff would of course cause it to die regardless. I guess they didn't have time to actually check the pressure the old fashioned way (although this system varies pressure depending on demand - it's return-less).

I have a sneaking suspicion that replacing the HPFP is easier... it's right there in plain sight at the rear of the passenger side cylinder bank.

Interested in the outcome either way though.

Thanks for the tip. Just called the dealer..my advisor was out today, but it sounds like maybe both pumps were ordered. On two occasions I started it up and it would idle so rough it shook the whole truck. Eventually shut it down to prevent damage. I’ve been following (and posted about my 1985 Ford Ranger) in the “worst car you’ve ever owned thread” on TacomaWorld. Hopefully my Tacoma doesn’t end up there.

Thanks again. Well I just had a very good dealership experience
I am out of town right now I am in wake forest NC. As I told you about truck so I decide to visit a Toyota dealership in wale forest which I was totally impressed with the complete service. Never thought I would say that about a dealership. I can tell that is a well run organization unlike the Toyota dealerships in Maryland which is where I am from. Any way the advice you gave me was so correct. The dealership came back and told me the same thing It is good to know people are being honest with you. I was there for about 1 hour and 30 minutes and they did some other stuff as well
My experience was great with the dealership. They listened to my concerns and addressed them all for a decent price. The dealership is LELIGH Toyota in wake forest. I may buy my next Toyota from there. They also asked me who has been working on my truck and I told them Toyota in Maryland and he shook his head and said they screwed the old filter too tight and broke the plastic seal. Any way thanks again for your input

Your advice played a huge roll into this and I believe kept the dealership honest

Picked up my truck today. High pressure fuel pump replaced. That’s why I joined this forum-the very first reply to my problem is what the dealer did to my truck. Very sharp people on this forum. Will let everyone know if any more trouble arises. The dealer was Merrillville Toyota. Not happy that they cleared my codes and sent me on my way, only to break down in the middle of nowhere a few weeks later. This is my first Toyota (Honda’s for 30 years) and first experience with them, will let everyone know how my other experiences go.

It’s hit or miss, my 19 never had an issue nor has my 20. Just something to be on the watch for. And same pump across trims.

    Work in progress...
Park it as close to this dealership as possible, where traffic enters the sales lot. Pop the hood and set up in a lawn chair, ice cooler and umbrella. Make sure the dealer plate frames are on the truck. Make yourself a sign that says "Ask Me about Joe Blow Toyota." Use the actual dealership name. I repaired a Dodge Neon electrical system under warranty using this method back some years ago.

I was loving the truck other than the constant breakdowns. I almost bought a Honda Ridgeline (30 year Honda guy starting with a 1988 CRX Si) but opted for the “truck” versus unibody.

Oops. Somehow I misread the date your post, and though you posted that you picked it up on June 10th, not July 10th, so when I asked you how it was running, I thought you had picked it up a month ago. Sorry about that. Hopefully that fixed it.

Don’t close this thread just yet. Truck stalled out again today and threw trouble codes. Not even 2,000 miles and in the dealer three times. Unbelievable. Service Manager at Merrillville told me that “someone from the factory” will be out to look at it. Forget a mechanic. This truck needs divine intervention.

So IIRC, they only replaced the high pressure fuel pump, correct?
