Best on-road tire pressure for LT tires?

It's a silly question but I can't find anything on google or searching these forums. Just upgraded to new Falken Wildpeaks 265/75R16 (LT, 123 load index, 80 PSI max) and the tire shop filled them to 35 PSI, I have them currently at 65 PSI. Is this good for on-road or should I run them higher or lower? I am averaging 21 MPG currently.

It's actually about the same as the stock firestones, I ran them at max 44 PSI. My highway MPG is excellent, often hitting 23.

 

you can do whatever you want, those tires can hold a lot. but if you're asking about tire function like grip, life, handling, etc, then the answer is obtained through a chalk test. every truck is different with weight. but if you want to run them at 80psi for added mileage then just do it. and then save for some new teeth.

 

You're likely going to prematurely wear out the center most 3-4" of your tire tread with PSI higher than 45...

 

Chalk test isn't perfect. Mine showed about 35 for full contact, but that showed abnormal tread wear. 38 or just above cold is what is wearing best for me. I am on 255/85r16 ST Maxx.

 

With radial tires the tire pressure has far less effect on the profile of the tire, so the chalk test isn't very useful, and you're unlikely to wear out the center of the tire faster.

The pressure listed on the door jamb is probably the best mix of ride quality and efficiency for a stock vehicle. Add weight (or tow), and it might be worth reconsidering.

Speed and weight-of-foot have more to do with your gas milage, unless your tires are just that flat.

I run my 265/70-R17 E Toyo RT at 38psi, when they warm up they get to around 44psi on the highway..
When I hook up the trailer and tow I'll boost it up to 50psi.

I’ve experimented between 30 and 40 psi. 40 felt like a dump truck compared to the stock tires at 32. 35 has been a happy medium. I’ll try 65 and tell you what I think.

35 all around is a good generic rule for tacoma and 4runner and sienna

I run 38 typically but recently went to 35 all around since hitting a more rotted out connector
road on my commute...a few lost psi does smooth out rumbles a hair

 

There is no "best" inflation for on road use of LT tires. Dude, the tire is designed to hold weight and not deform, so if you don't have any weight, then you can run a low pressure. Don't hand me a crock of shit telling me your E tire rides as good as a P tire either. They don't. They can't physically.

my generic rule of 35 all around is on ordinary LT Michelins LTX Defenders and mostly empty trucky

if I am hauling excess weight like 1000 lbs them pressures are going to MAX
and if I am hauling weight all the time not just a few times (a real work truck)
then I get better truck tire rating (with a worse unloaded ride)

I'ma say my 30" E tires ride amazingly better than any bubblegum P or LT rated cheesy crap. 35psi here. these tires are like driving on rocks even medium low pressure.

 

80 PSI is intended for a fully loaded 3/4 ton or 1 ton truck with a GVWR over 10,000 lbs. You wouldn't even put that much air in a 3/4 ton truck unless you were hauling near max. Most guys with 3/4 tons run 50-60 PSI for normal driving.

The wheels on your Tacoma aren't rated for over 65 PSI, you stand the chance of splitting your rims with that much air in them.

The tires that came on the truck call for about 30 PSI for best ride and 44 PSI for max hauling. I always ran closer to 40 PSI with those tires.

But the E series tires are stiffer and don't need as much air to carry the same weight. Around 30 PSI is a good place to start for best ride. If you're going to haul any weight then closer to 35 PSI. No reason for more than that in a Tacoma.

 

I had to run 40-44 PSI with the P rated tires in order to safely haul any real weight in my Tacoma. With the E rated tires I can run them at 30-35 PSI and still haul the same weights. At those air pressures there is no difference in ride

 

I agree with most of what you said, except for the risk and of splitting the rim at 65psi. I’m skeptical about that because I routinely put 100+ psi in my bicycle tires.

 

I just got new ridge grapplers 265/75/16 and the tire shop had them at 40 psi. The ride felt very rough so I aired down to 32 and it feels much better now.
