Not hipster enough. :p Rear diff break-in occurs over the first 500 miles. For my truck, that happened late January. I laid a sheet of foam plastic over the ice in my driveway and put in just over 4 quarts of Pennzoil 75W140.

Ok I follow you there regarding the numbers, but it is not easy to overfill. Basically it is either: A.) 3rd gen overflow valves are fucked; or, B.) the manual is wrong.

You fill till it trickles out so I dont see another explanation, unless the oil was gushing out(500 ml worth) as he screwed it back in.

U talking about the breather? He was probably on an incline. Not enough to worry about though.

If the breather is working, what's the harm in overfilling anyway? Unlike the engine, there's no oil pump. Diff lubrication depends on oil being whipped up by the oil slinger and ring gear.

I know you know this but just for clarity, two plugs: drain plug and fill plug with overflow function when full.

    1. Open fill plug.
    2. Open drain plug and drain.
    3. Close drain plug.
    4. Put new oil in fill plug till it slowly trickles out of same plug. Replace plug.
    5. Torque to spec.

Nothing to do with breather. OP has 30 years of wrenching, therefore we must respect him and assume he was on flat ground. Therefore, to overfill by 1/2 quart he would of had oil gushing out of the fill plug (i.e., overflow function) as he screwed the plug back in. Again, 30 years so I presume that did not happen. Goes back to scenarios A and B. Make sense?

    Let’s hope not.

This thread has potential to be useful to some, but if it becomes a stage for all the members whose parents didn’t pay enough attention to them when they were children...not so much.

I only fill to filler for piece of mind on customers cars.

My own vehicles I fill below filler, just so I can touch it.

    Also fluid expands with temp.

Low means I can touch or see the fluid.

I brought my truck to the dealer cause I ran out of washer fluid. Thought Toyota’s didn’t need this kinda maintenance. Happy Friday eve.

I don’t know what the argument is here, but I seem to overfill both the front and rear diff every time I change the fluid. It always ends up puking out the breather at some point. I always fill until it runs out the fill hole.

I apologize for conflating liters and quarts. The perils of carrying two passports. I've updated the original post, you can all rest easily.

Just don't put 4 quartz in. Toyota diffs don't like mineral oil.
