I top out my OME 882 550lb? all the time. No cracks so far unless they are small and hiding below the nuts. Rubber bushing vs bearing could be a factor.

 

I mean, you bump stops are taking pretty much all that stress when you bottom out. I don't think it's caused by bottoming out, just abuse of use over and over and over again.

I'd check them closely when you swap the shocks again. I'm sure your days are numbered as well.

 

Yep. And basically 1:1 you've broken exactly the same things on your truck as mine.


It's 100% a spring rate and top out, not bottom out, issue. You guys are missing the point IMO. The forces of a top out when you unweight the front tires will be greater as the spring rate increases.

Limit straps are the solution.

 

So what, your limit straps just weren't working? That what you've chalked up to yours cracking?

Or mine for that matter? Which honestly is probably true after they stretched.

My limit straps were hammer fucked.

I've beat on my rig pretty hard, included a couple more jumps, since replacing them and have had no more issues show up.

 

I think you misunderstood. Lengths being the same, if you decompress a 700lb coil from a full compression it will create more force on top out than a 650.

I think the length of travel argument is pointless. Another 1/2" of travel won't make enough of a difference to prevent top outs. You do have a slight bit more time for the shock to slow it down, but that makes so little difference by the time your front tires are in the air.

 

I didn't mention anything about bumps...

When compressed a linear spring has a lot more than 700lbs of energy in it. Now, a sudden unload and its slamming the shock to full extension

 

In this scenario, there is also the mass of the unsprung weight (primarily wheel/tire, caliper, a-arms, etc.) wanting to continue in the downward direction even after the shock fully extends. IMO, this is the point at which damage to the coil bucket and LCA shock mount tabs occurs. This is also what limit straps attempt to prevent.

 

I think the part you're still missing is that full extension usually occurs after a full compression.

Therefore you have whatever preload in the spring, plus the 5" or so of travel of the coilover. Every coilover has some preload in it otherwise the coil would be loose at full extension. Not sure exactly how much, you would need to measure the length of the spring with the coilover off the truck. So say 7" of total spring compression of a 700lb coil is 4900lbs of force and decompressing suddenly. I'm not sure how to do the exact math on what that equates too.

You're basically launching all that unsprung weight. That kinetic energy is going to be more than just the spring rate and weight of wheel, tire, spindle ect.

Well after 22 years its time for a new dash front, console and new AC vents that work instead of flopping around.

Also got a headlight plastic polishing kit for 5.00 and cleaned the clear speedo cluster plastic and looks like new,

 

The real trick to solve this issue is have multiple frames laying around like someone I know

I had my powered sub mounted under the drivers seat, but the new power seats didn't have the room. So I needed to move it.
At first I was going to mount it under the passenger seat, but then I realized my kids are growing up and I can't fit two of them back there.
So I removed the bottom seat cushion and mounted my sub to the back of the cab.



My cell booster transceiver will mount to the right of the sub. I mounted the antenna for the future cell booster install happening soon.

 

Finally finished up the shock relocation. Thanks to @jberry813 for the nitrogen charge. Just need to get new leafs now.
