I just got back from the shop. I was told i had a “blown head gasket” . Dude told me he will replace the gasket, timing belt, water pump, valve cover seal , spark plugs and He”l make sure the block has no cracks or was damaged . So pretty much an engine rebuild for 3,400$. I believe that’s a lot of money. So at this point I’m lookin into trading it for a newer or same year with less miles on it . Mine has 243k as of right now . Sucks because I’m emotionally attached to this build and everything I’ve done to it myself .

Oh, thought the pop n locks didn't allow for reinstallation of the camera. Just looked again and I think I see it? I've wanted to install a lock but thought I'd have to relocate my camera so pushed it off for now.

    Link?

A 12" in an access cab is excessive for sure. Either 1 10" or don't get subs at all and instead improve the 6x9's in your doors by giving them an enclosure (woofer box inside your door). They'll LOVE it.

    That sucks!

It wouldn't be "pretty much a rebuilt engine" as the pistons, rings, cylinder walls, and bearings would still have 243K miles on them.

Personally I'd keep the truck and get a used engine out of a wreck. It ran good enough to get into a wreck (lol). You're in Texas, it shouldn't be too difficult to find a wreck/used engine.

The mechanic suggested that too . He also said it would be around the same price to buy n install a used engine. .. I just don’t trust mechanics, that’s why I’ve done most of the work myself n I’ve saved couple thousands by doing so . But also I wouldn’t go as deep as the head gasket all that is out of my knowledge range. I’m gonna look at all my options before I make a decision.

    A little perspective...

I paid $1,800 for the head gaskets to be replaced, new timing belt, new water pump, and fully rebuilt cylinder heads (Tacoma 1st gen, 3.4L V6).

For your 2nd gen, you were quoted $3,400 for pretty much the same job.

After I discovered that repair that I wrote above didn't work out, I had the same shop buy and install a used low mileage engine. I paid $2,400 for that job.

You were quoted $3,400 for the same job (different gen of Tacoma).

I don't blame you 1 slightest bit for not trusting mechanics - especially the mechanic giving you these qoutes (IMO).

Yea that makes more sense tbh.
Im lookin in Craigslist’s and eBay for wrecks. Also . Does the engine swap has to be the same year and trim ? I’m finding a lot of 2008 x runners .

Sorry to hear about your situation, but may I suggest you try to see if you can do it. I never did a head gasket until our commuter car blew one, so I found a Hanes Manual and the directions for the process were very clear and I just took my time to perform the task and the results were successful. If I lived near you I would be willing to help out, maybe a TW member near you will volunteer to help you out.

Oh! No, there's a little window that pops out for camera. Super duper easy installation. This is the one I bought in black gloss hoping it would prevent any fading but there's other colors too now.

A girl at autozone volunteer to help but the wife wasn’t so happy about it :’D
But yea I thought about doin it myself then I remember I live in an apartment with no garage and a very limited parking space :/ I’m stuck between two walls . Financially I have enough for either an engine swap or what I was quoted for. A member suggested I do a leak down test First. I believe if I take it to another mechanic he’s just gonna tell me the same thing wether he’s Lying or not . What did you drive as your commuter?

Little bit of this and that
Where in TX? $3400 seems steep for a HG job even with replacing the standard list of components.

Fort hood, TX . That’s what I thought. I gave it a chance since they have the best reviews and “price “ in town

I installed a lighted license plate frame in preparation for my new tube bumper. I also buffed down a bit of trail rash.
