Throw out bearing going out...need to replace 1 1/2 year old clutch again?

I had a new throw out bearing, new slave cylinder, new clutch and the flywheel resurfaced 1 1/2 years ago. The throw out bearing is going out. One shop said they would have to replace the clutch at the same time and the Toyota Dealership said they can just replace the throw out bearing. Any comment on if a 1 1/2 year old clutch should be replaced because the throw out bearing is going out?

    Thanks!

Shops just recommend replacing the clutch since I believe it’s removed to replace the throw out bearing.

there are some options out there for tob longevity since it’s a common annoyance on Tacoma’s.
Side note, they all squeak so if your clutch is operating normally, the squeal isn’t hurting anything and you’d be fine not doin anything to it.

How do you know it's going out? The throwout bearing chirp is incredibly common on 1st/2nd gens, mine chirped on my old clutch and new one started chirping again on the new clutch about 5k miles in. I just live with it, only 'fix' I've heard of is the URD one but even that doesn't always work from what I've heard.

An actual throwout bearing failure is pretty rare on Tacomas

The chirp stops when the clutch pedal is pressed. I had 2 mechanics hear it and they agreed it was the throw out bearing. The truck shifts fine but the chirp is annoying.

Yeah that's exactly what mine does. Used to do it all the time but it rarely does it nowadays for some reason. Comes and goes. I just live with it, I can all but guarantee if you replace the clutch again it will come back. Maybe try the URD kit if it's still available, seems to work for some.

Normally after many miles it is recommended to replace them all as a set Clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing...

But considering yours is only a year and a half old I wouldn't, unless they have been abused. I would however inspect the clutch disk, pressure plate and flywheel when the transmission is out and make my call based on what I see at that time.

The mechanic that stated they all must be replaced at the same time is trying to scam you as that is entirely false. Did he know it was recently replaced?

The URD sleeve kit works pretty good. The noise will likely eventually come back depending on conditions your driving in. Mine has came back after like 70k since replacement but its not as pronounced as it was before. Rather you really have to try to hear it over the clutch fan. And it only appears on cooler mornings.

I reached out to URD and they responded that I could change the bearing but that it will probably start chirping again.
Yes, the shop that said all would have to be replaced knew I had just had a clutch out in 1 1/2 years ago. I had asked him for a quote to just get the bearing replaced. I try to do a lot of research before I have anything done to my truck. Get tired of having them try to scam me into doing work I don’t need because I’m a woman. At a different shop they tried to tell me a serpentine belt for my truck was going to cost me about $79. I laughed and told him I could get a good one for $38 at Auto Zone. He quickly said he could do me a favor and match the price. I went and bought one and had a friend put it on instead.
I won’t worry too much about the tob. I just hate the chirping when it’s loud.

Find another shop. No way to know if clutch needs replaced till you see it. Your orig. only lasted 8 1/2 yrs.? These days, they should, & usually do, last longer unless abused. Just my opinion.

    noooooo.

Edit: The urd sleeve kit does not resolve the chirping issue. It is designed to resolve shaft wear problems where the throw out bearing rides. The bearing itself is an OEM bearing that has had the inner diameter machined to fit over the sleeve and in operation is no better or stronger then OEM. They do offer a hydraulic throwout bearing which should work, but i've seen a lot of success with clutchmasters kit.

    yes!
I've had way more clutch issues then i can count. The chirping comes from there being insufficient space for the throwout bearing to fully disengage from the pressure plate. As the friction disc wears it gets thinner and the pressure plate fingers stick further out making the already too small gap even smaller. This is where your chirping is coming from - The pressure plate fingers are contacting the throw out bearing with the pedal released. This additional wear will also cause premature failure of the throw out bearing.

I would strongly recommend purchasing the clutch masters throw out bearing kit and one of their shim kits. This hydraulic TOB can be thrown in as is or be easily shimmed to fit aftermarket clutches, etc. This is the resolution to the issue.

Consider a clutchmaster TOB, I've heard those have more longevity over the URD TOB.

When I bought my X Runner the TB had the chirp noise. Replaced the clutch and pressure plate, TB, slave cylinder and the fork. Truck had 93k miles all original.

Toyota used either LUK or Aisin at the factory. Aisin seemed to be the preferred brand of the mechanics I talked to. Put it all back together and made sure to adjust the free play on the clutch pedal, yes there’s a service bulletin for that too. Insufficient free play causes the TB to spin all the time resulting in rapid wear. With everything set to factory spec I drove another 60k miles with no problems.

If the chirp stops when the clutch pedal is depressed, it's definitely not the throw out bearing. Throw out bearings make noise when you press the clutch pedal, because that's when it makes contact with the flywheel. If the truck makes noises all other times, it is likely pilot bearing or improperly installed/torqued clutch plate. I just had this same issue in my 2016 and it turned out to be improperly installed clutch plate, leading to a new clutch, flywheel, throw out bearing, and a hefty service bill. Genius shop gremlins tried to ram 2 bolts home through the flywheel after they cross threaded them, unsurprisingly it loosened and started to tear itself apart quickly. Clutch had as much wear after two weeks as my first one did after 4 years

If you are talking about gen 2 truck 6 speed you really need to read the service bulletin. Then you’ll understand where the chirp is coming from.

Wow. You needed to replace the clutch on a 4 year old truck?

    That is crazy early.
