If you decide to sell, wouldn’t hurt to take it to CarMax like suggested and see what they offer at least. It’ll probably be the next best price you’ll get next to private sale, with zero hassle, and the evaluation is super quick, you may be surprised what they offer.

Piggy-backing on this discussion - is Kelley Blue Book's private sale value a number to start with or is that a fairly definitive amount to seek?

I have a 2008 Doublecab SR5 2WD, 64,000 mi, hard tonneau cover, mint/garage-kept, and Toyota-maintained. Private sale price according to KBB is $18-20,000. Is that a good price to shoot for?

Conversely, dealer wholesale is about $12,500.

The tonneau cover adds nothing to the value. It’s 12 years old. It’s only a 2wd. I am assuming a V6 auto and 6 lug. It’s not TRD. KBB aside I think 18-20k is a bit high since it’s lacking what many search for in a Tacoma. Maybe the condition of it will convince a buyer to pay closer to that number since Tacomas of that age have at least double that mileage and show their use.

    Yes - V6 auto and 6-lug.

If you're going to trade it, trade it for a new vehicle.

Keep in mind that trading will save you taxes on a new vehicle. For example, if you trade for $18k, and the tax rate in your state is 6.5% you would save $1170 in taxes on the new vehicle, so in theory, you traded the vehicle for $18K + $1170 in saved taxes. Depending on the tax in your state, it may be even more, so you may want to sell the aftermarket stuff and then trade it in on a new vehicle.
