rear shocks only control and dampen the movement of the leaf springs. Springs do all the work, shocks keep it under control.

ways to lift rear of truck: spacer block, add-a-leaf (AAL), new leaf pack, or airbags (to some degree).

Another option is a shackle lift, but those don’t really exist for tacomas. I think the only one I’ve seen is about a quarter inch or half inch.

You only have 3” of down travel on the front suspension. A 3” coilover-based lift will reduce that to zero, thus you don’t really see any of those on the market. The high end lift kits come with aftermarket UCAs and extended travel shocks to give you 1” more of down travel, which in theory could allow lift it slightly higher if you like.

 Then why do I have to jack my truck up more than 3 inches to get the tire off the ground?

Mine drooped 3in pre-lift per my tape measure. AFAIK, a 3rd gen (non trd pro) has about 8” of travel, 3” down and 5” up. YMMV

There aren’t really any shackle lifts for the 3rd gen because the shackle is inverted, the frame mount is below than the spring mount. AFAIk, this was not true in previous generations.
