Those wild blackberries were delicious tonight after supper with some butter pecan ice cream.

My cages got crushed by snow shedding from the garage roof this past winter
And everybody was sold out this spring, because of all the new gardeners, so I'm back to staking mine this year. Which isn't horrible, but it does take more time than just sticking them in a cage. :notsure:

I am experimenting with a new system this year, and so far I like it. I cut a strip out of a livestock panel and mounted it horizontally attached to steel fence post. The tomatoes I grow only ever get to be about two feet tall. With varieties that get taller you could easily add another strip of livestock panel higher up the post.

I'm doing a stake & string grid, and just adding levels as they grow. Same concept, but different execution.

I do love gardening and could get carried away... Photos are from the past few years.

We've eaten yellow squash and tomatoes this year. Also have lime, lemon, Anna's apple, Dorset Golden apple, mandarins, Asian pears, banana, cherimoya, figs, passion fruit, dragon fruit and more. All trees were planted over the past 10 years. Also have a collection of cycads - maybe 25 species. Bromeliads, butterfly and humingbird garden, etc. At last count we had around 300 species on our quarter acre of property. Oh yeah, the wife has three hens.

Yes, 100% agree. The best tomato you will ever buy from a grocery store will not be as good as the worst one you grow. Also, don't forget sweet corn. Corn starts converting sugars to starch within hours of being picked. The absolute best corn goes from the stalk to the pot to your belly within 15 minutes. Oh yea, lettuce too. I am so spoiled on fresh picked lettuce that I have a hard time eating even good salads at restaurants, and wouldn't even think about buying it from the store, yuck.

Nothing like the smell of garden picked tomato wafting through the air. Agreed - no comparison at all. Generally, they pick the commercial tomato before they are ripe so they ship well. Even here in SOCAL commercial tomatoes suck. Sometimes you can get lucky at the farmer's market. I was raised picking watermelons out of the field - same story...however, we do get some pretty good watermelons.
