I have hauled the big bag of gravel from Lowe's twice with no problem. I think it is 2000 lbs

I doubt you bought a bag of gravel from Lowes that weighed 2000 lbs. 2000 lbs of gravel is almost 20 cubic feet. That would almost completely fill a 5' bed. 2000 lbs is almost double what a Tacoma is rated for and more than 90% of the 1/2 ton trucks are rated for.

I'd haul a ton of gravel in most 1/2 tons though. With most of them you'll only be overloaded by 200-300 lbs. For a short distance, occasionally, I'd be OK with that. But with a Tacoma you're going to be over by 800-1000 lbs. There is a big difference in overloading by 10%, and going over by double.

I did 2200lbs of soil in my beater F150 long box. Had no idea, but I aired up the bags to 50lbs and drove 40 minutes on the slow road to the dump.

I hit a pot hole and thought the truck was going to break in half. The scale shook me, now I do the math with big loads.

The Tacoma is a half ton truck. Payload is 1200 lbs and a half ton is 1000 lbs. I personally have carried more than a ton on several occasions. I have two extra leaf springs on my truck so it barely squats when loaded. I have carried more than a ton on my 1991 Toyota pickup regularly. Surely the this much bigger truck can carry the same as the older "pickup". Back on the farm in another lifetime we had a 1975 GMC half ton we would carry 4000 lbs of fertilizer regularly.

this was before it rained it got a lot heavier. I drove about 20 miles on the bump stops. Not something I’d do all the time but didn’t notice any damage so I got away with it.
