Any of you guys use S drive all the time?

I’m aware it’s only a gear limiter, but coming from mostly all manual vehicles I think this is a really good compromise between an auto/manual. Comfort in some ways and can hear the aftermarket exhaust if I want to rev it out.

Maybe I’m just missing my manual transmissions a lot over the last week but can’t bring myself to trade in my first new vehicle.

Anyone else find it fun or do I just look dumb using it?

 

I use it in mountain roads going uphill to limit upshifting and downhill to engine break.

Sometimes I use "S" to get the truck in 6th gear on the freeway

 

I use it a lot for engine braking, or if I know I'm gonna pass someone I'll put it in 4th or 3rd in preparation

 

in neighborhoods to keep from speeding

 

Use S for towing. With ECT on it upshifts correctly and I can manually downshift when I need.

 

i used S all the time before the latest @OVTune. So yes it’s fun and no you don’t look dumb.

I use it all the time, as well as the ECT. I cannot stand how sluggish the engine/transmission is in D. I think it totally wakes these trucks up running in Sport.

I'll use it if the auto starts toggling between gears, usually 5th and 6th at some rpms or a windy day, I'll remove the upper gear choice.

Other than that I just use D 95% of the time.

I have another vehicle with a manual if I feel the need to row the gears.

 

Yep, S4 or S5 plus ECT 100% of the time.

 

I use it a lot, or I'll also just set it to 5th and let it do it's thing.

I prefer to shift it out over using ECT - I guess I like the control, but not enough to have bought a MT.

 

I use mine driving in the hills to engine brake so I don't have to heat up the brake pads on long downhills. I use it on forest roads sometimes just for fun!

 

Only time i used the S mode is in conjunction with ECT when towing, otherwise the transmission performs fine just like my tundra did.

 

When i tap the brakes going down a steep grade in the D mode my transmission automatically downshifts into 4th or even sometimes into 3rd gear depending on the speed. No need for moving the lever to the S mode.

 

Mine downshifts too, however it doesn't want to stay downshifted so I use S mode to control it.

 

Mine will stay until i hit the gas petal.

 

Unless I'm driving over 75 mph, I leave mine in S5. My overall MPG has gone up a little. The truck doesn't constantly search for a gear. I have added a little over 600 lbs to the truck with skids, sliders, front hitch, rear bumper, bed rack and tool box. That definitely affected how it drove in 6th. The truck just seems to drive better when the RPMs are closer to 3k. I find myself fethering the throttle more.

 

Most of my driving is on back roads where the speed limit is 45-50, but according to the trucks speedo i run a consistent 57-60 mph just slowing some for sharp corners. Truck gets better mpg in the drive mode running around 1500 rpm give or take a 100. its not a lot but there is a couple tenths better difference

 

Always use it. I just put the truck in the gear I want and drive. If the truck downshifts, I didn't select the proper gear.
I drive mine like a stick. Going down my steep drive, it's in 1st. Just like it would be with the MT. Always use it for engine braking as well. Years now, never any issues and my brakes easily last 100K.
