Just got a 2020 Off-road DCSB and took on a 1,700km trip. First HWY trip with it.

while using cruise control I’m super disappointed on the transmission and how it shifts. Kicks down two gears when it doesn’t need too. Then she it gets back up to speed it seems to go 5th gear for a second and then right to 6th. Then it repeats.

I should say I’m lifted 3” and have 33” tires.

question is, will 488 gears fix all this or is there someway to tune the vehicles transmission?

    any others have this experience?

the double overdrive situ is more a nod to the EPA
rather than if Toyota had free reign matters woud be different

    i had a V6 DCLB 5speed
was not as fickle as my i4 6speed

    i use 4th around town
5th at legal speeds out past suburbia
would NOT consider 6th unless i was consistently over 75mph............ results in reckless driving citation/appearance in front of judge!!!!!!

i get very good MPG......simply put engine is operating in optimum ranges

heres where much is lost in translation

the ECM (engine control module) defers to the EPA directive
IF anyone thinks Volkswagen is the ONLY mraque to cheat in the EPA Shed ( they are selling the recalled diesels now!!!! )
feel free to use my free flyer miles / my condo in Aghanistan

no less that module (usually more than one ) has a ' memory '
if U drive mostly hi-way...............it wont do well city/suburban until Ur driving ' trends '
of course the opposite is true if mostly bump/grind city
thenU decide to go a trip

1700 miles would have put U firmly in a different ' trend '
yet if it started out fickle shifting arbitrarily
    long run that will persist

essntially the basis of reason many are offering 8......9....10 speed
dual clutch trans on many offerings
i tried yet most of the time i dont feel the change in gears
its shifting tho its NOT as apparent

i think the new SXT is an 8speed
even tho many a Taco owner wants MORE HP...................
    the SXT HAS MORE HP
yet it has a more complicated trans ( Notice i didnt say sophisticated)

    4.88 will fix that.
The truck will also learn from your driving habits and correct itself over time if you don't change your gears.
It's a 2020 and the first HWY trip so I'm assuming your miles are still somewhat low.

You probably answered your question with the bigger/heavier tires. My cruise control on the sr5 with the stock tires works fine, same as the tundra i had.

My auto trans, cruise control works fine as well on my '18 TRD Sport. I did have the TSB preformed. As others have stated the auto trans works better with age after adapting to your individual driving habits.

Put it in S5 so it will never go into 6th gear. If you feel you can use 6th put it in S6, then shift when needed.

With the stock tires it should go into 6th and hold. I'd have to drop below 50 mph to get the transmission to downshift into 5th. Never ever a need to use the ECT or S mode if not towing or carrying a good load in the bed. I've tried putting it in the S mode especially 5th....feels like it needs another gear when on the flats. 4th it just doesn't fell right at all, like it needs overdrive bad.

Starting to wonder if these computerized engines are all tuned the same, some maybe weaker than others that you need to run only in the S mode, or are these the tacos that are running with bigger tires that have to do this.

I have the same issue as OP, transmission hunting gears, hoping it fixes it self before the first dealer visit (tire rotation). I am sitting at 1,3xx miles.

Just ran an almost 500 mile trip yesterday from VA to GA. Truck ran flawlessly the entire way. Didn’t “gear hunt” at all. 2020 auto here. Granted, it’s on stock suspension and tires.

2020 auto too. No issues at all. Shifts really good actually. Driving style maybe?

Cruise control at 120kmh - 75mph. Traveling across B.C. AB and Sask. Our Trans Canada HWY. Pretty straight. If driving 10 over the speed limit is driving style, then maybe. Other then that I am not an aggressive driver in town at all.

I was having the same issues in BC on stock tires and lift driving on the highways in BC.

I’m hoping it gets used to it like some have stated above. I was mainly asking if re gearing to 488 would fix this issue. Sounds like the transmission learns with time.

I’m going to try in S and see if the truck can pull the gradual hills in 5th without dropping to 4th.

What? Volkswagen was intentionally changing parameters only when been tested to pass the EPA requirements. Then it would go back to running in a manner that didn’t pass the test.

I don’t think Toyota making the transmission shift points less than desirable for users is the same thing at all. They are actively trying to deceive the test.

I have no doubts that all manufactures are trying to push the boundaries of the testing requirements. But what you cited it a poor example of it.

Same here. 2020 with 1,060 miles and the hunting is truly ridiculous. It’s pathetic. Something is not right.

I’m essentially forced to run ECT and S mode 4 for most of my drive.

If your truck is anything like mine was, that gear hunting, and really poor low end power should of started disappearing. My truck runs pretty strong now at 3k miles with none of the wonky tranny issues it began with.
