What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Made some progress replacing my power steering lines. On Thursday I got a little too rowdy with the Pittman puller and ended up deforming the end of the tie rod bolt, I had to use the angle grinder to shave off enough to disconnect the TRE.

Today I went to pick up new LBJs and outer TREs from Toyota of Louisville. At 162k, I figured it was time to replace the LBJs. This afternoon I got the steering rack removed completely, trashed the old lines, and have the new lines bolted in place.

I bought some metric service wrenches at Harbor Freight to remove the outer tie rod ends, but I don't think they're going to be long enough with the amount of rust I'm fighting. What kind of wrenches should I be using for those 27mm and 28mm tie rod nuts?

 

It is fuckin HOT. But we managed to complete the mission.

 

Finally installed my tundra brake calipers, rotors, pads and stainless steel brake lines kit (thanks @turbodb )
Easy upgrade but of course rust made it difficult to install. Stripped both brake line ends but heat and bolt extractor kit take care of that.

 

Penetrating oil and heat is what you need.

 

I've been using both, I feel like I'm going to need a longer wrench. The harbor freight service wrenches are pretty short.

 

Have you tried a cheater bar? I'm not sure what wrenches you're using, but with combination wrenches you can hook two together if you don't have a cheater bar.

 

Finally had a chance to drop by the shop and pick them up... after I finished liftin @Reyes87 truck today.

10 inch Fox 2.0 Reservoir with 7/8 shaft.

The 10 inch Fox 2.5 bodies were too long, so I went with the 2.0s... but was still able to get the 7/8 shaft instead of the 5/8. With the resi, I think the 2.0 should be more than adequate for what they will be doing.

I mean we all know this is just for a mall crawler after all.

 

I did my front/rear SS brake lines a couple summers ago in mid August 110+° heat, never again

 

Fortunately we were done just before it actually broke 100 today. Supposed to hit 105.

I'll admit, I got a little loopy. Wasn't watching the hydration like I should have, but feelin good now.

 

Brakes look good! But, uh... you have to address that frame before you put another dime into that truck! Scary!

 

That's just to hot. I lifted a friend's FJ last November. That was bad. there was already 3inches of snow on the ground.

 

Yea about that...I bought the taco for dirt cheap bc of the frame. I replaced the rear section of the frame and installed Chevy 63 leaf springs. When I was replacing the brakes today, noticed how much rust it has may sell it.

 

Oh screw that. I'd rather do heat than cold... everything hurts in the cold.

 

We're complaining of working in the blazing heat and you post a snow photo you bastard haha

Although doing repairs in the snow sucks in it's own way. Have only had to do that once personally.

 

Agreed being over 40 and wrenching in 30° temps suck!!! Fortunately my payment for the work was a bottle of gentleman jack. So the soreness went away quickly.

 

I'd rather work in the heat. My hands don't work anymore in the cold. On the bright side it was only 82° up here today.

 

a 3 ft section of inch and a half schedule 40 PVC pipe is my go to cheater bar.

 

Ok now... no need to rub it in and be a dick.

 

Trust me I'll pay for it this winter when something brakes... And it will!
