Pro on the interstate

Had an off road for 11 years, saved up and treated myself to a 19 Pro in October. It feels like I really have to gun it on the interstate to maintain 70 mph. When I do, it will definitely jump up there, but feels like it is working hard to do so. The off-road didn’t feel like this. Guess this is what a Pro is like?
It’s got 8k miles now. Wondering if I trade it in for a 20 or 21 Sport, would it feel better on the interstate? I bet I would take a bath on value. I’m not a purist, just a family man with a commute and bills and I never go off-road, just always loved the idea of having a pro and now have buyers remorse.

 

That’s just the 3.5. You had a 4.0 which had a decent amount more power

 

2nd gen to a 3rd gen....Toyota says it’s normal.

 

You're in a modern vehicle, geared and programmed for low emissions and high(is) fuel economy, so it's got 2 overdrive gears and an engine that doesn't make torque until the revs get up. It's got nothing to do with being a Pro, other than an inch taller upfront will cause a little more wind resistance.

 

4.0 has less HP at all rpms

 

This engine likes the RPMs.

 

it has more than you need in terms of potential, but most of these trucks are tuned down to death and run like weak crap. if you wake it up it's an amazing highway machine and beyond. but for me, being performance-focused, it took me a while to find the zone. a simple tune would probably be enough for normal usage if you have complaints with the stock configuration.

Not Pro specific, all 3rs gens are weird. You get used to it or trade in for something else.

They subconsciously come to the rescue when someone has a different opinion or experience. Some weird psychological defense mechanism. "Stop saying mean things about my 3rd gen Tacoma."

lol Define "decent amount more power." 3.5 makes 278 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque. 4.0 makes 236 hp and 266 lb-ft of torque.

OP, the difference in feel is gearing and drive by wire throttle. The 3.5 also makes peak power about 800 RPMs higher. Toyota wants fuel efficiency, so you have to stand on the gas and get the RPMs up. This engine likes higher RPMs and that will be the same with any 3rd gen. There's a huge thread on the OV Tune that might be worth checking out, as others have said. Another thing, if you're using cruise control, it will drop multiple gears when it doesn't need to. My wife's 4Runner does it and my Tundra would even do it and I live in GA where it's pretty flat.

 

It's basically the same peak torque with 3.5L and 4.0L with 4.0 being slightly more at 400 less rpm. The chart is somewhere on here.

 

Actually had less power. They just have it in different places.
