I saw two new Rangers that I haven't noticed before. Between seeing those two I didn't see a single new Tacoma. Tacoma is the sales leader in the segment but Tacoma sales are down in comparison to last year, despite new features and improvements over the previous models.

Ford had some pretty sick incentives on the 2019 Rangers late last year before the 2020's rolled in. Up to $7,000 off MSRP. That's a lot of truck for the money if you are willing to wait for the end of the model year.

What do you say? Nobody wants to spend 50+ grand on a vehicle built by a manufacturer known for building subpar, non-reliable Vehicles?

Every Ranger I have looked at was $50,000 plus.

Not me.....even back then you had to wrench on your truck a lot. They would go 200k but not without a bunch of work. The Tacoma will probably do 200k with just tires, brakes and oil changes.

Yes, although to be fair they were the sales leader before they left the US. I, personally, thing the sales figures would be a lot closer if Ford had actually put effort into bringing back the Ranger like they're doing with the Bronco, instead of just making some minor updates to the international version and calling it "all new."

They seem to want to do it with GM vehicles which are arguably worse.

It's been international for a while and out of the US since 2011. Ford decided to modify the international version and call it "all new" for the US.

No surprise there. I wouldn’t even consider a mid-size outside of Toyota. Full-size is another story. I see third gens literally EVERYWHERE. I can’t go 1 mile down the road and not see one. These trucks are unbelievably popular.

Not a fan of the Ranger at all. I don’t like the look of it. I’d pick a Canyon or Colorado over it if a Tacoma didn’t exist.

Same. The hard part for me is reliability. After my last truck, a 1st gen GMC Canyon, I just don't trust GM for reliability.

Hell I'm a ford dealer tech and I hate the rangers, I dont care about the output torque numbers, the timing cover leaks on that engine, it doesn't come dclb, the trans downshifts funny with that engine, the oil filter is in a stupid place(driver wheel liner has a removable section), the interior takes a while to get use to, and I dont want a damn four cylinder in my truck for towing, I dont care if its turbo or not.

Never owned one and don’t really know much about them. Their little 5 cylinder engines intrigued me though. I liked the body style of those trucks a lot. The front end with those square headlights looked pretty cool. I still see a few on the road here and there.

I don’t trust the “turbo” bullshit. That screams unreliable to me. I just want a standard gasoline engine that runs 87 octane with no thrills.

I am not really a truck guy. I am a guy who likes to do things and the truck is a way to do and enjoy them ... so I am no expert. I looked closely at the Ranger. Why not? I don't hate Ford ... they are a great American company and I wish them well. Plus, the better they are the more pressure they put on Toyota.

Could be just me -- and again, I am no expert -- but it seemed the Ranger was more than $5K more than the 2020 TRD OR I bought. The two dealers I went to were terrible. I really wanted to give the Ranger an objective and honest chance but I found it very boxy and clumsy (you can tell I don't write car reviews!). It didn't drive well for my tastes. I wish them well ... but honestly liked the Frontier better. In the end, despite what everyone says about the third gens here, the Tacoma was really the far superior truck. Just my uninformed option. :)

The key in all of this is not sales volume ... the key is how much discounting Ford has had to do to hit those numbers. I would bet -- with no evidence -- that Toyota is making banks on the Tacoma margins while Ford is seeing margins squeezed badly.

Good friend of mine in Ohio swears that there are Rangers on the lot that are almost as much as the F150. I like the F150 but it is too big for my needs.

I can’t even imagine someone taking delivery of a Ranger and spending MORE than they would have if they had bought the Tacoma. What a kick in the balls that has to end up being. Resale will plummet and the Toyota is tried and proven.
