Key stuck in ignition

So over the past couple days my key has been hanging up in the ACC position of the ignition makeing it a struggle to take out. I squirted some WD40 and it seemed to work but now it is stuck and doesn't want to come out! It sticks with my extra key as well! Any suggestions on how to remedy this issue? Thanks in advance!!

 

I know on my old 4Runner and other cars i have had in the past the key can stick based on the steering column being in a bad angle. If you shake the steering wheel it will let the key free. I haven't had this problem in my tacoma but in the 4runner when it would happen i would crank the wheel all the way to the end with some force or set the column up or down and the key would turn freely.

Not a fix but should get the key out if your in a bind.

 

Ive had that happen a few times in my 01' Taco. The solution for me was to put the truck from Park to Drive, then Immediately put it from Drive to park, and It popped right out. You dont even have to have the truck turned on, Just make sure you have the truck with the electricity on right before the ignition spot.

 

I don't know guys! Just went out to try all the above and she came rite out like it's supposed to

 

That is without all the recomendations! Anymore ideas?

 

This... Happened to me and left me in a parking lot for 30 min trying to figure it out.

Once at the dealer the attendant pulled the truck up ... sat there for a bit and then came in to the counter with the paperwork minus keys. He said "they're stuck."

I went out, turned the wheel to the left a bit and removed the key.

He looked at me as if I had performed some sort of miracle.

 

Sun spots? The electromagnetic energy the put out might cause this phenomenon...

 

Are you still having the problem or has turning the wheel to the left cured the problem?

After I try lithum grease and only b/c I don't have KY on hand JK

Just got back in from wrestling with it again! Of all the things that could FAIL, why this

 

If this is an automatic transmission, the shift lock may not be letting you put it back in "park" all the way, which would not allow you to pull the key out. You may want to try the shift lock override.

 

It is an automatic and what is this shift lock override you speak of? I guess it's time to bust out da owner's manual

 

this happens a lot with people that buy keys from us at work. if its a copy of a key then it may just be that the grooves are not worn to your lock yet, we have freshly cut keys that do that from time to time, and we kind of shimmy the key up and down with a pair of slip-joint pliers and yank at the same time. usually they will come out after a few attempts, and we just take the key after that and put it in and out of the lock very very very quickly several times to wear it down more.

BUT if it is not a copy of a key, and you cannot get any of the suggestions that they have given you to work, open up the steering column up, and remove the ignition. try it in a vise, if that doesn't work, swing it by a locksmith. it will be cheaper to take it to them then them come to you. **the only reason i say this is because with my old mud truck i used to have i had the exact same issue and had to wind up taking it to a locksmith to get it out.***

It should be in the emergency section of your owners manual under
If the shift lever cannot be shifted from P

 

if you do manage to get the key out try using some liquid graphite. i got some under the name lockease i think and it works great when the door locks become difficult. lasts alot longer than wd40.

 

It might be that the shifter is not all the way in park. Check out the plastic on the shifter (the plastic that moves with the shifter). The plastic could be binding. This happened to me and I would shove it into park and the key would come out just fine.
